Marler, Hinnant Lead Ragin' Cajuns at SBC Championships

Ortego finishes as top freshman in event; ties Hinnant with tournament-best 11 birdies
EL DORADO, Ark. – Jake Marler and Peter Hinnant each recorded a 2-over-par 74 while Eli Ortego posted the best finish by a freshman to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team during the final day of stroke play at the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Championships on Tuesday at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
Louisiana finished tied for 11th in the 54-hole event finishing at 916 (311-300-305) overall.
Hinnant led Louisiana on the par-72, 7,318-yard course, finishing in 15th place at 225. The senior capped off his Sun Belt career posting a 1-under-35 on the back nine with his 11th birdie of the tournament, and 414th of his career, coming at No. 18.
Ortego, who tied Hinnant with 11 birdies in the tournament – the most among all golfers in the SBC field – finished one stroke back at 226 after posting a 4-over- 76 in the final round.
Marler capped off his initial appearance in the SBC Championships by sinking three consecutive birdies to open the back nine and finishing at 230. Jose Dibildox carded a 7-over 79 to finish at 235 overall while alternate Matt Weber posted an 83.
Georgia Southern, Little Rock, UT Arlington and Georgia State advanced to Wednesday's match play semifinals. Georgia Southern and Georgia State will face each other in one semifinal match with Little Rock and UTA competing in the other semifinal. The semifinal winners will square off in the championship match with the winner receiving the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
