No. 48 Louisiana tests unblemished Sun Belt record in final two conference matches of the regular season
MOBILE, Ala. - The No. 48-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team wraps up Sun Belt Conference play in the spring 2022 dual match regular season with a pair of road matches in the state of Alabama from Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3.
The last leg of Sun Belt play in the regular season begins on Saturday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. in Mobile with a matchup against South Alabama at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. The following morning the Ragin' Cajuns will be in Troy for a 10:00 a.m. meeting with the Trojans at the Jimmy C. Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Louisiana (17-2, 4-0 Sun Belt) seeks to keep its unblemished conference record intact and has its eyes on the Sun Belt's regular season championship. A pair of wins over the weekend would clinch the undefeated run through the league and the outright title.
A LOOK AT LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off of an impressive homestand sweep of Georgia Southern and Georgia State last weekend at Cajun Courts which kept the team atop the Sun Belt standings, and moved them into sole possession of that first-place standing. Both wins were clinched at 4-1 and were led by Vasil Dimitrov landing commanding wins to finish first in singles play and place Louisiana on track for the victory both times.
Singles play has been where the Ragin' Cajuns have conquered opponents this season and it came into play last Sunday when the squad claimed four consecutive singles wins to put away then co-leader of the conference Georgia State. For the season, Louisiana stands at 70-33 in singles play and is led by a pair of 14-game winners in Oriol Fillat Gimenez (14-3) and Dimitrov (14-5) as well as Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez and Calin Postea who have 13 and 12 wins, respectively.
Louisiana looks for Dimitrov, Sanchez Gonzalez and Kacper Dworak to continue their hot streaks. The trio all went 2-0 in last weekend's sweep with Sanchez Gonzalez, the team's primary No. 2 singles player, stretching his current winning streak to five games.
In doubles play, the Ragin' Cajuns have won the point in three of their four Sun Belt matches so far and in all but two matches dating back to Feb. 26. Louisiana has been strong on Courts 1 and 2 throughout the season with the No. 1 pairing of Karlo Kajin and Sanchez Gonzalez having recorded an 11-5 record and the No. 2 pairing of Fillat Gimenez and Dimitrov standing at 10-6.
THE OPPOSITION
South Alabama (12-6, 2-1 Sun Belt) has proven to be difficult opponent on its home court this season, as the Jaguars enter the weekend 8-0 at home. Louis Delcour and reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Sébastien Collard are tied for the team lead with 11 wins in dual match competition. Like the Ragin' Cajuns, the Jaguars are strong at the top in doubles with Jack Clements and Delcour sporting a 9-5 mark this spring playing at No. 1 and Collard and Maxime St-Hilaire standing at 10-2 in doubles playing at No. 2.
Troy (13-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) enters the weekend winless in Sun Belt play and faces UT Arlington on Saturday prior to Louisiana's visit. The Trojans are another squad that's been strong at home this spring, sporting a 6-1 mark with the first loss not occurring until last Saturday vs. Coastal Carolina. Vito Llinares and Carles Anton lead the Trojans with 17 and 16 wins over the dual portion of the schedule, respectively, while Pelayo Antuna, Noah Martens and Nicolas Simkin are all in double-digits for victories.
