Louisiana Tops Georgia State in Matchup of Sun Belt Men's Tennis Leaders

Strong showing in singles made the difference for the 47th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns
LAFAYETTE - Four consecutive wins in singles play lifted the No. 47-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team to its latest quality win, a 4-1 triumph over Georgia State on Sunday, March 27 at Cajun Courts.
The win allowed Louisiana (17-2, 4-0 Sun Belt) to maintains its position at the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings, and to also break a tie with Georgia State (11-7, 3-1 Sun Belt) in the first-place standing.
It's the Ragin' Cajuns sixth high-quality win of the spring 2022 dual match season, adding to previously recorded wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Rice, Texas Tech, ETSU and UTSA back in February.
Louisiana remained unbeaten at home, now 6-0, and finished off a weekend sweep of the Sun Belt's Georgia schools. On Friday the Ragin' Cajuns clinched a win over Georgia Southern at 4-1.
After a near-miss at claiming the doubles point, with GSU posting a 7-5 win on Court 1 to clinch the point, the Ragin' Cajuns path to victory was set in motion when Vasil Dimitrov quickly posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to even the match.
The lead was Louisiana's for good once reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez, bumped up to No. 1 singles, scored an impressive 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 win over the Panthers' top individual player Andrei Duarte.
Oriol Fillat Gimenez and Calin Postea started off with first-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to set the stage for the Ragin' Cajuns clinching the match. Their results held the visitors at a single point despite second-set defeats.
With Fillat Gimenez and Postea extending action into a third set, it was Kacper Dworak and Alejo Ferrer Chueca wrapping up the match victory. Ferrer Chueca, making his Sun Belt season debut, landed the clinching point for Louisiana by rolling to a 6-0 win over Edward Tymes in the tiebreaking set at No. 6 singles.
Sunday's results capped off strong weekend performances from Dimitrov, Sanchez Gonzalez and Dworak who each finished the homestand undefeated (2-0) in singles action. Sanchez Gonzalez extended his personal winning streak to five games, improving to 13-4 on the season, while Dworak collected his ninth win to move within one win of becoming the fifth Ragin' Cajun to reach double-digit singles victories.
