NATCHITOCHES – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team wraps up a four-game trip away from home when it visits in-state opponent Northwestern State in the first of a midweek home-and-home series on Tuesday at Brown-Stroud Field.
First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 6 p.m. The teams conclude the midweek on Wednesday when the season series concludes in a 6 p.m. contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. Fans in the Lafayette area can listen to both games on ESPN Lafayette (103.3 FM / 1420 AM) and at RaginCajuns.com.
Louisiana (3-4) looks to bounce back after dropping three games at the Karbach Round Rock Classic in Round Rock, Texas. The Ragin' Cajuns opened the four-team event dropping a 5-1 decision to No. 2-ranked Stanford – which allowed one run during the weekend – before falling to Indiana and No. 3-ranked Arkansas.
The Ragin' Cajuns will send senior Austin Perrin (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound in Tuesday's contest with Northwestern State (3-3) slated to open with right-hander Chase Prestwich (0-0, 6.00 ERA). Starters for Wednesday's game in Lafayette are to be determined by both teams.
Carson Roccaforte (.300-1-8), Connor Kimple (.273-3-7), Kyle DeBarge (.231-0-1) and CJ Willis (.231-0-2) pace Louisiana at the plate.
Louisiana leads the all-time series against the Demons, 87-49, and will play in Natchitoches for the first time since a 12-inning, 8-6 victory on Feb. 28, 2017.
Louisiana, which has won 14 of the last 16 meetings in the series dating back to 2010, with the Demons claiming a 10-8 victory in the last meeting between the schools to snap an 11-game Ragin' Cajuns win streak in the series.
SCOUTING THE DEMONS
Northwestern State, under sixth-year coach Bobby Barbier, opened its season Feb. 18-20 taking two of three games at home from longtime rival Stephen F. Austin before dropping two of three games last weekend against Oklahoma at Arlington's Globe Life Field.
The Demons, picked to finish fifth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll, will play their first midweek games of the season this week against Louisiana before going back to Arlington for two games beginning Friday against Nebraska (at UTA's Clay Gould Ballpark) and capping off the weekend on Sunday at UT Arlington.
Larson Fontenot (.360-1-2) and Duante Stuart (.320-0-2) are the top hitters for the Demons with Cam Sibley, who is 1-for-18 in his first six games, leading the team with three RBI.
ON DECK
After completing its home-and-home series against Northwestern State, Louisiana face future Sun Belt Conference rival Southern Miss in a three-game series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The Ragin' Cajuns will then head back out on the road for a pair of midweek games beginning on Tuesday (March 8) with the first of two games at Louisiana Tech .
Louisiana will travel to the Crescent City the following night (March 9) to face New Orleans in a 6:30 p.m. battle at Privateer Park.
