Ragin' Cajuns will face Northwestern State in midweek home-and-home beginning Tuesday
ROUND ROCK, Texas – Jalen Battle's three-run homer in top of the eighth inning helped No. 2-ranked Arkansas overcome a two-run deficit and the Razorbacks withstood a ninth-inning rally to earn a 6-4 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in the final game of the 2022 Karbach Round Rock Classic on Sunday at Dell Diamond.
Jaxon Wiggins and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as Arkansas (4-2) earned a split on the final day of the four-team event. Louisiana, which led 3-2 after seven innings before loading the bases with no outs in the ninth, dropped its third straight to fall to 3-4 overall.
The Razorbacks took the lead for good in the eighth inning after Bo Bonds issued a one-out walk to Chris Lanzilli before Jace Bohrofen followed with a walk off Louisiana reliever Dylan Theut (0-1). Battles then gave Arkansas a 5-3 lead after homering to left off Drew Shifflet before adding a run in the ninth on Robert Moore's RBI double to left.
Louisiana fought back in the bottom of the ninth as Julian Brock was hit by a pitch with Heath Hood and pinch-hitter Mason Zambo earning walks to load the bases. Brock scored as Tyler Robertson reached first as he beat out a potential double play grounder, but after stealing second to runners on second and third, Will Veillon's hard-liner to short was caught by a leaping Battles, who tossed to second to double up Robertson for the game-ender.
The Ragin' Cajuns took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as the first three batters reached base off Wiggins before Connor Kimple's one-out grounder scored Kyle DeBarge.
After Arkansas tied the game in the third inning on the first of two errors in the frame, Louisiana reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Carson Roccaforte doubled into the right-field corner to score Veillon and DeBarge.
Jeff Wilson fanned a career-best six batters in 4.2 innings for Louisiana. Roccaforte went 2-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the Ragin' Cajuns with DeBarge recording a first-inning single while helping stop an Arkansas rally in the seventh inning as Bonds got Moore to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Wiggins fanned four batters and allowed three hits in six innings of work for the Razorbacks. Zebulon Vermillion (1-0), Nick Griffin and Kole Ramage each pitched one inning in relief for Arkansas with Ramage earning his third save of the season.
Louisiana will wrap up its four-game road trip on Tuesday when it visits Northwestern State (3-3) for its first true road game of the 2022 season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be the first of a midweek home-and-home with the in-state Demons with the teams set to wrap up the season series on Wednesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
