Daigle Takes Home Gold at Sun Belt Championships

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Track and Field distance runner Sophie Daigle broke her fifth and sixth records of the season as the senior paced the field in the 3k and the 5k at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

As a team, the Louisiana men placed third among the conference field while the women took fourth.

On Monday, Daigle finished the 3k in 9:52.82 to break her previous best mark of 9:58.51.

In the 5k, Daigle again bested her previous best time crossing the line ahead of the field in 16:52.88.

The senior was one of three Louisiana athletes to claim the conference crown in their respective events.

Freshman Serenity Rogers was the first to stand atop the podium for the Ragin' Cajuns as the freshman separated from the competition in the 60m dash with a time of 8.31 seconds.

Louisiana was dominant in the men's 200m dash as junior Brock Appiah took gold with a time of 21.24 seconds followed by freshman Caemon Scott who earned bronze in 21.43 seconds. Freshman Kashie Crockett finished the race fourth in 21.50 seconds.

Following the first-place finishers, four Ragin' Cajuns took home silver at the championships. The men's DMR team of freshmen Peyton Chiasson, Brandon Rhone, Baptiste Depril Dupre and Louden Boudreaux finished second with a new program-best time of 10:07.35.

Following his gold, Appiah earned a silver medal in the 60m dash with a time of 6.79 seconds. Freshman Trejun Jones finished one slot off the podium in 6.86 seconds.

Junior Yves Cherubin took second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.92 seconds, while the men's 4x400m relay team of freshmen Nathan Fergusson, Antoni Hoyte-Small, Rhone and Javed Jones claimed with a time of 3:12.07.

On the women's side, freshman Kiana Foster raced to second in the women's 60m dash in 7.39 seconds. Louisiana's Shemia Odaine finished fourth in the event at 7.54 seconds.

Louisiana's final podium spots were earned by junior Chandler Mixon who took third in the men's heptathlon with 5,521 points and Odaine who took bronze in the long jump with a distance of 6.02m.
