Louisiana Men’s Basketball Closes Out Home Slate Against ULM

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Men's Basketball close out its 2021-22 home slate with a rivalry matchup against ULM 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cajundome.
 
Louisiana traveled to Monroe, La. on Thursday and defeated the Warhawks 78-77. Redshirt-freshman Kobe Julien converted a free throw with 2.0 seconds remaining to give the Ragin' Cajuns the victory.
 
Jalen Dalcourt scored a season-high 16 points on Thursday in 22 minutes off the bench.
 
Jordan Brown led the team with 26 points and eight rebounds. The performance marked the second 25+ point performance of the season and the third of the career for the Roseville, Calif. native.
 
After battling injuries for most of the season, Brayan Au has averaged 17.0 minutes in the last three games. On Thursday, he totaled nine points on three 3-pointers.
Junior forward Theo Akwuba has been a dominant defensive presence around the basket for Louisiana this season. Akwuba needs just seven more swatted shots to pass Reginald Poole (169 -1994-99) for third place on Louisiana's career blocks leaderboard. The junior passed Jakeenan Gant (156 - 2017-19) earlier this year.
Led by Brown and Akwuba, who rank third and fourth in the Sun Belt boards, the Ragin' Cajuns are second in the conference with 39.1 rebounds as a team.
 
After the loss on Thursday, ULM stands at 13-14 on the season including a 5-10 mark in conference. The Warhawks currently occupy the 10th position in the Sun Belt standings and are led by senior guard Andre Jones who is averaging 15.5 points and 3.8 assists this season.
 
The home finale will also serve as senior night for Louisiana forward Dou Gueye. The senior will be honored during a pregame ceremony. Since arriving from Daytona State Junior College in 2019, Gueye has helped the Ragin' Cajuns achieve 42 wins while scoring 642 career points. The Dakar, Senegal native finished the 2020-21 season ranked sixth in the Sun Belt in rebounds per game and has accumulated 10 double-doubles in his three seasons.

SERIES NOTES
Thursday will mark the 77th meeting between the two programs as Louisiana leads the all-time series 55- 21.

Following an 11-25 (44%) performance from beyond the arc in the last matchup, Louisiana ranks third in the Sun Belt in percentage (35.0) and second makes per game (7.8).

LOUISIANA LEGACY
Louisiana's 2021-22 roster features two second-generation talents in Julien and Brown. Julien's father Wayne was with the program from 1976-81 and was a member of the 1977 Southland Conference championship team.
 
Dion Brown lettered for the Ragin' Cajuns from 1980-84 and finished his career as one of the top scorers and rebounders in school history. Brown, a 1984 graduate of UL, earned All-Southland Conference honors in 1982 and was a two-time All-Louisiana selection.
 
He finished his career with 1,412 points and 926 rebounds (then second in school history) and helped then-USL to the championship of the 1982 Great Alaskan Shootout where he was named to the All-Tournament team.
