Ragin’ Cajuns rekindle relationship with in-state foe, seek to continue winning ways
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team concludes its week-long stay at home on Saturday, December 3 with a 2:00 p.m. matinee at the Cajundome against Louisiana Christian (formerly Louisiana College).
The matchup with the Wildcats marks the final game before final exams week. The game is being promoted as "Finals Night" providing a study break for UL students and with free scantrons being handed out while supplies last.
It's the first meeting between the two in-state programs since the 1996-97 season.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Dan McDonald (pxp) and Scott Brazda (color) providing the commentary. Fans in the Acadiana region can listen to call of the game by Steve Peloquin on 103.3 FM The Goat and 1420 AM and worldwide on the Varsity Network. Live stats will be provided by CajunStats.com.
The Ragin' Cajuns (4-4) head into the second month of the 2022-23 season riding a three-game winning streak. The newfound success began with a two-game road sweep of the UNT Fall Feast and continued on Tuesday when the current homestand kicked off with a 72-40 win over LSU-Shreveport in the program's annual Education game.
Louisiana received a complete team effort in dispatching LSUS as all 14 players who took the floor played at least nine minutes, each one had least one rebound and there were 12 who registered points led by Alicia Blanton who led all players in the game with career-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds. The Ragin' Cajuns continued to score inside with 42 points in the paint and saw a hefty 46-point production from its bench.
Garry Brodhead and his staff should get another well-rounded look at the team's roster against the NAIA-based Wildcats (3-4).
Tuesday's Education Game win evened the Ragin' Cajuns record as the squad continues to bounce back from a prior four-game losing streak. Louisiana has a chance to push its record back above the .500 mark for the first time since the season-opening win over Houston at the Cajundome.
Tamera Johnson, who has already produced four double-digit scoring performances and three double-doubles, leads the Ragin' Cajuns averaging 10.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Other top scorers include Lanay Wheaton (6.9) and Nubia Benedith (6.6), Wheaton tops the squad with 15 assists and 15 steals, and Johnson and Caira Wren have combined for 40 offensive rebounds (5.0 per game).
Louisiana Christian, which will play the game as an exhibition, dropped a 30-point decision (88-58) to ULM back on November 7 in its lone prior outing against D1 competition. The Wildcats, who snapped a three-game skid with a 69-65 win over University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Thursday, are led in scoring by Miya McKinney (13.3) and Claire Borot (10.0).

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
- Flipping Streaks: A win would give Louisiana a four-game winning streak, which would be coming on the heels on a four-game losing streak (Nov. 11-20).
- Welcomed Rest: The Ragin' Cajuns are set to enjoy a seven-day rest following Saturday's LCU contest. The season will resume on Sunday, December 11 at Auburn.
- Welcome Rest (Part 2): Being able to give minutes to every single player on the roster on Tuesday vs. LSU-Shreveport, Louisiana was able to provide critical rest to its starting rotation which had battled the grueling stretch of seven games over 20 days and faced four teams coming off postseason appearances from 2021-22.
- Double-Double, Tamera's Trouble: Tamera Johnson has shown she'll pose problems for opposing teams in the coming weeks and months. She's coming off a double-double dominated performance of the UNT Fall Feast in which she averaged 14.5 points and 11 rebounds.
- Taking it to Them: In a newly developing trend, the Ragin' Cajuns have held a commanding 114-50 edge on points during its current three-game win streak (averaging 38 points per game in the paint). The inside scoring surge proved monumental in the 60-59 win over North Texas, which began the streak, with Louisiana outscoring the Mean Green 40-20 in the paint.
