Louisiana set for a pair of tournament contests at UNT’s Super Pit
DENTON, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team takes a Thanksgiving weekend trip to Denton, Texas to compete in the UNT Thanksgiving Tournament being held from Friday-Sunday, November 25-27 at The Super Pit on the campus of the University of North Texas.
The Ragin' Cajuns are scheduled to face host-and former Sun Belt Conference-foe North Texas on Friday (Nov. 25) at 7:30 p.m., then round out the weekend facing Abilene Christian in a Noon matchup on Sunday (Nov. 27).
The UNT contest is being televised live on YouTube free of charge, while live stats for both games will be available at CajunStats.com.
While in Denton, Louisiana (1-4) seeks to end its current four-game losing streak. The Ragin' Cajuns have faced a daunting stretch recently, though, taking on 2021-22 NCAA Tournament participants No. 3 Texas, Colorado and Jackson State in succession, followed by last Sunday's contest with Texas Tech.
It's the second straight week that the Ragin' Cajuns participate in a tournament. Last week, Louisiana took part in the Preseason WNIT with a pair of games in Lubbock, Texas, before closing out the event in the Cajundome with Texas Tech.
Louisiana seeks to build upon the momentum of forcing TTU into its season-high total of 23 turnovers and a 37-point second half which marked the squad's highest scoring half of the young season.
Tamera Johnson (9.6) and Lanay Wheaton (8.4) are the top scorers for Louisiana with Johnson pulling down a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. North Florida transfer Nubia Benedith is coming off a career-high 16 points vs. Texas Tech.
North Texas (1-2) is led by reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Quincy Noble who is averaging 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Abilene Christian (2-2), winless away from home, has nine new faces on the roster for 11th-year head coach Julie Goodenough including five transfers.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
- Thanksgiving Memories: Louisiana last competed in a Thanksgiving holiday tournament back in the 2017-18 season, traveling then to Las Vegas for the SouthPoint Thanksgiving Shootout. The Ragin' Cajuns split games with Niagara (won) and Cleveland State (lost).
- Hello, Old Friend: Friday's game matches up the Ragin' Cajuns with former conference mate North Texas (Southland, 1984-97; Sun Belt 2001-13). The two programs have met just twice since UNT left the Sun Belt, the Mean Green winning both times: December 2019 in Denton and December 2020 in Lafayette.
- Road Warriors: The UNT Thanksgiving Tournament completes a stretch in which Louisiana plays five of its first seven games on the road.
- Taking Charge: Sparked by a pair of 15-point efforts during the opening week against Houston and No. 3 Texas, Tamera Johnson is the Ragin' Cajuns leading scorer averaging 9.6 points per game. She has led Louisiana in scoring three times in the season's first five games.
- Second Wave Developing: Louisiana held a 29-22 advantage in bench points over Texas Tech, with the vast majority of production resulting from Nubia Benedith's career-high 16 points. The Ragin' Cajuns also got contributions from Mariah Stewart who connected on both her field goal attempts for four points, while Jaylyn James added four points as well and Lizzy Ratcliff posted three points from the charity stripe.
