Ragin’ Cajuns Grab Early Lead, Jaguars Recover to Win in Four Sets

Louisiana hands South Alabama its first opening-set defeat since mid-September
MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team was unable to maintain the momentum gained from a win in the opening set as South Alabama rallied to overcome the visitors and take a 3-1 (17-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-14) win on Friday at Jaguar Gym in Mobile, Alabama.
The host-Jaguars (13-7, 7-1 Sun Belt) took advantage of a 44-25 edge in kills during their comeback. As a result, the Ragin' Cajuns (9-8, 3-5 Sun Belt) played from behind each time the lone lead change in the second and third set occurred and played from behind the entirety of the fourth frame.
Louisiana opened the match with a resounding win in Set 1, sparked by a 7-2 surge that began with a Coco Gillett kill and combo block from Mya Wilson and Celeste Darling.
The Ragin' Cajuns established firm control at the midway point of the set when Wilson scored a kill, joined in on a block and Lauryn Hill landed a kill increasing the lead to 15-8. Gillett later helped seal the triumph with a kill and block for a 22-16 edge, then back-to-back USA attack errors moved Louisiana to set point.
Louisiana got off to a strong start once again in Set 2 and remained ahead 5-4 after getting a pair of kills from Cami Hicks. The Jags broke through with a block that snapped a 5-all tie and later used a six-point run to open an 18-9 advantage.
Darling powered down a kill from the right side for a 3-all tie in Set 3, then USA scored seven straight points and wouldn't trail the rest of the evening.
The Ragin' Cajuns wouldn't back down in the battle for the match lead slicing the deficit to 14-9 and prompting a USA timeout after a block involving Wilson and Gillett. The Jaguars got a much-needed side out after the stoppage and went on to expand the lead to 20-12.
With a kill from Hannah Maddux and a 9-3 sprint out of the gate in Set 4 the Jaguars led from start-to-finish in completing the match victory.
USA completed the two-match series sweep, extended its winning streak to six matches and handed Louisiana its fourth consecutive defeat.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Gillett led Louisiana with 12 kills and a team-high 46 total attempts. She added 13 digs for her first double-double since September 2 and her 14th match of the season with double digits in digs.
Darling reached eight kills for the second straight night, ending the weekend series tied with Gillett for team-high honors with 16 kills. She also had a hand in five blocks.
Wilson led all Ragin' Cajuns with seven blocks, her season-high total. She added six kills off of 15 swings to her final stat line.
Paige Guidry started at libero for the second straight match and hauled in a team-leading 17 digs.

Louisiana has its first cross-divisional matchup of the 2022 season when Sun Belt East foe Old Dominion makes its way to Earl K. Long Gym for a two-match series from Thursday-Friday, October 20-21.
