Louisiana to start the season at No. 22 in the organization’s rankings

LAFAYETTE - To start the fifth season under the guidance of Gerry Glasco, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team will be among those ranked in the D1Softball Top 25 Preseason rankings.

D1Softball released its first ranking for the upcoming 2022 collegiate softball season on Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2022). Louisiana was listed at No. 22 in the poll.

The Ragin' Cajuns (47-12, 21-3 Sun Belt in 2021), the two-time defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions, have appeared in every edition of the organization's preseason rankings.

D1Softball's Top 25 rankings are headlined by lead writers Rhiannon Potkey and Tara Henry.

It's the 19th consecutive season in which Louisiana will be preseason ranked. The program has been preseason ranked by the NFCA each year since 2004, and listed in every edition of the ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason poll which began in 2006.

During the 2021 season, Louisiana reached 40 wins in the regular season by winning 25 of the final 29 games. The squad's march to repeat honors as Sun Belt regular season and tournament champions was highlighted by an 11-1 record, regular season and tournament combined, against the league's other three NCAA Tournament participants (Texas State, Troy and South Alabama). The Ragin' Cajuns advanced to Championship Sunday of an NCAA Regional for the third time under Glasco's watch, extending the program's streak of reaching the final round of a regional to 13 consecutive appearances.

Louisiana, an NCAA Tournament participant each year since 1999, begins the 2022 season at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park with the 36th Annual Louisiana Classics from Feb. 11-13 – and is scheduled to spend the entire first month inside or near the city limits of Lafayette.

The official season opener is set for Friday, Feb. 11 with a 4 p.m. doubleheader vs. UAB at Lamson Park.

ABOUT LOUISIANA
For head coach Gerry Glasco, his fifth season in Louisiana will have a different look and feel than the previous others: the team largely consists of players he recruited and went from being one of the oldest in the nation to one of the youngest.

Following the 2021 season Louisiana ushered out eight seniors – a group that included multi-year contributors Summer Ellyson, Alissa Dalton and Julie Rawls – who had a profound impact on the program's success. Beginning with the 2022 season, a group of 12 newcomers (eight freshmen, four transfers) step in to begin writing their chapter of success in Louisiana Softball history.

Louisiana is armed with the nation's No. 1-ranked recruiting class of the 2021 recruits by Extra Innings Softball. Seven of the eight individuals were featured in Extra Inning Softball's Elite 100 led by pitcher Sam Landry (No. 4) and outfielder Maddie Hayden (No. 15).

After working alongside then-ace pitcher Summer Ellyson in 2021, it's now Kandra Lamb's turn to lead the pitching staff. Lamb (17-5, 2.02 ERA, 164 K in 2021), a first team All-Sun Belt performer who hurled a three-hit shutout of No. 16 LSU in her last start of 2021, won't be alone in picking up where Ellyson left off. Kentucky transfer Meghan Schorman provides Louisiana another arm with collegiate experience and Landry, ranked No. 4 by Extra Innings Softball amongst the Class of 2021 recruits, proved throughout the fall she's ready for the challenge.

Both Raina O'Neal and Taylor Roman are back and ready to contribute after season-ending injuries last February shortened their playing time in 2021. Both possess home run-hitting power and should help the Ragin' Cajuns offense in the quest to replace production lost to graduation, while O'Neal returns to anchor the defense in center field.

With her infectious energy Sophie Piskos helped light the spark in Louisiana's strong second-half run in 2021. Expect more of the same, on a game-by-game basis, as Piskos becomes the next in line to man the catcher's position.

On the infield Texas A&M transfer Jourdyn Campbell is the frontrunner to defend at the all-important hot corner (third base) and be one of the team's leading run producers. Washington transfers Stormy Kotzelnick and Ari Quiñones are expected to be factors on the right side. In the outfield, Hayden and fellow freshman Kramer Eschete are candidates to break into the starting lineup and provide tremendous speed.
