Ragin’ Cajuns and Jaguars meet in tournament for the first time since 2019
PENSACOLA, Fla. – With the 2020-21 regular season in the rearview mirror, Louisiana Women's Basketball opens play at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon when it takes on South Alabama in the quarterfinal round. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and TalkRadio 960AM.
Having only faced opponents from the West Division over the course of the season, the matchup with the Jaguars will be the Ragin' Cajuns' (14-5, 13-1 Sun Belt) first look at the East Division this year.
The two teams last played on Feb. 6, 2020, in Mobile, with South Alabama winning the contest, 78-63, while Saturday's matchup will be the first time the two teams have met in the Sun Belt Tournament since March 11, 2019, a game that South Alabama won, 73-61.
Louisiana capped off the regular season in style, winning two games over Little Rock at the CAJUNDOME to clinch the first Sun Belt Regular Season Championship in program history. The wins also extended the program's winning streak to 13 games, which is currently tied for the eighth-longest streak in the nation.
Senior Ty'Reona Doucet and junior Brandi Williams starred for the Cajuns all year and will look to continue that strong play during the tournament.
Doucet currently leads the Sun Belt in field goal percentage (54.3) and leads the team in rebounding (8.1), while Williams leads the team in scoring (11.7), which ranks tied for 14th in the league, and is first on the team and second in the Sun Belt in 3-point field goal percentage (41.8).
South Alabama (13-2, 9-9 Sun Belt) has already played a game in the tournament, taking down Arkansas State in the First Round by a score of 73-64. Antoinette Lewis played all 40 minutes in the contest for the Jaguars, scoring 13 points and bringing down 19 rebounds.
Lewis, who was tabbed as the league's Preseason Player of the Year, proved why this year by pacing the Jaguars with 11.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest. Savannah Jones (11.6 ppg), Devyn Lowe (11.3 ppg) and Mahogany Vaught (10.6) all join Lewis as double-figure performers.
Louisiana and South Alabama will be meeting for the 58th time on Saturday, with the Jaguars leading the all-time series, 40-17.
