LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Women's Basketball will open its Sun Belt Conference slate on Thursday, Dec. 30, when it welcomes UT Arlington to the CAJUNDOME. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Thursday's contest will mark the first time that the Ragin' Cajuns will open league play at home since the 2012-13 campaign. In the Garry Brodhead era, the team owns a 3-6 record in Sun Belt openers.
Louisiana was stellar during the non-conference portion of its schedule, owning an 8-2 record and bagging impressive wins on the road at Rice and at home at Louisiana Tech. The LA Tech game was the Cajuns' most recent victory, a 69-57 triumph.
Junior Diamond Morrison led the way, matching a career-high with 14 points after going 4-for-5 from long range. The four made 3-pointers was also a career high. Morrison was joined in double figures by Lanay Wheaton and Makayia Hallmon, who contributed 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Entering league action, Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year Ty'Reona Doucet has made a significant impact, leading the way with 10.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest and a team-best 16 blocks. Destiny Rice is the only other Ragin' Cajun who averages double-figure scoring with 10.0 points per game.
UT Arlington enters the contest with a 6-3 record and is coming off a tough 61-46 defeat at Oklahoma State. The Lady Mavs played two Power 5 opponents in non-conference play and picked up a win over Houston in overtime.
The Lady Mavs are led by Starr Jacobs, who ranks 15th in the nation in field goal percentage (.597), 31st in the country in steals per game (2.8), 38th in field goals made (77), and 28th in points per game (19.1).
The two teams will be meeting for the 28th time, with Louisiana leading the all-time series 15-12. The Cajuns won the last outing, a 57-48 win in the CAJUNDOME on Feb. 8, 2021.
