Halloween contest first of two exhibition games for the Ragin’ Cajuns

LAFAYETTE – The 2020-21 Sun Belt Regular Season Champion Louisiana Women's Basketball team will get its 2021-22 campaign going on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Georgia Southwestern for an exhibition game at the CAJUNDOME.

Sunday's contest is the first of two tune-ups for the Ragin' Cajuns, who open the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 9, against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The team is led by head coach Garry Brodhead, who is entering his 10th season.

Louisiana is coming off its most successful season in program history, winning its first-ever conference title on the back of a 15-game winning streak. The team then made an appearance in the Sun Belt Championship Game and its first appearance in the WNIT.

Senior Ty'Reona Doucet and junior Brandi Williams will guide the team into the new year after the pair picked up Preseason First Team All-League honors. Additionally, Doucet was tabbed as the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year.

Last season, Doucet was named First Team All-Conference and was selected as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 10.9 points per contest and leading the team in total rebounds (167) and blocks (36).

Williams led the team offensively, averaging 11.9 points per game, and scored in double figures 15 times during the year, including a 20-point outing at Texas State (Jan. 1) and a career-high 32-point performance at ULM (Feb. 13).

Louisiana will look to its other seven returners from a year ago, including sophomore Makayia Hallmon and freshman Tamera Johnson, to step up after losing three key starters in Kimberly Burton, Skyler Goodwin and Jomyra Mathis. The team also reloaded with five incoming freshmen and two transfers.

Georgia Southwestern boasted a winning record a season ago, finishing its 2020-21 campaign 9-6 overall and 7-4 in Peach Belt Conference play. Senior Jamesha Samuel led the way for the Lady Hurricanes, averaging 16.7 points per contest in seven games played, while Lex Chatman started in all 15 games and averaged 15.8 points per contest.

Women's Basketball season and single-game tickets are on sale now. For more information on Women's Basketball tickets, fans can call the Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office at (337) 265-2170.
