Louisiana Falls to Southeastern Louisiana in Opener, 3-2

LAFAYETTE - On Opening Day of the 2020 season and a night dedicated to Tony Robichaux, Louisiana (0-1) dropped its first game of the season, 3-2, to Southeastern Louisiana (1-0) at M.L. 'Tigue' Moore Field at Russo Park.
Friday night's game was a true pitchers dual throughout the first five innings. Junior starting pitcher Conor Angel dazzled in his first career start as a Ragin' Cajun, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing one earned run on three hits.
Angel became the first pitcher since Joe Zimmerman in 2011 to start an opener having not been on the previous year's team. Although he was tagged with the loss, Angel struck out seven batters on 89 pitches.
Southeastern Louisiana starting pitcher Trey Shaffer was equally as impressive, earning the win and throwing 5.1 innings en route to striking out 10 Louisiana batters.
The Lions scored the game's first runs in the fifth inning courtesy of a three-run blast from Brandon Hale to left field.
Louisiana attempted to mount a comeback on the back of a Nick Hagedorn RBI ground rule double in the sixth inning and a Justin Greene RBI groundout in the seventh frame, but could not capitalize on a Jonathan Windham lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Ragin' Cajuns will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against Louisiana Tech with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
