LAFAYETTE – Head coach Matt Deggs has announced Louisiana Baseball's starting rotation for opening weekend. The athletes on the bump will be: RHP Conor Angel on Friday, RHP Will Moriarty on Saturday and RHP Carter Robinson on Sunday.
Angel, a Lachine, Quebec, Canada, native and Northwest Florida Junior College transfer, will be the first opening day starter that was not on the previous season's roster since Joe Zimmerman threw against Southeastern Missouri on Feb. 18, 2011. Angel started nine games in 41.0 innings of work in 2019 and posted a 3.29 ERA.
Moriarty is slated to be Saturday's starting pitcher. While pitching in junior college last season, Moriarty posted a 2-1 record, tallying a 1.35 ERA in 13.1 innings pitched.
Robinson, who stands at a monstrous 6'8" and was named the 2019 Spalding NJCAA DII Baseball Pitcher of the Year at Mesa Community College, logged a 1.53 ERA in 17 starts and 112.0 innings of work in 2019. He also pitched six complete games and notched 126 strikeouts.
Once Angel, Moriarty and Robinson all throw this weekend, it will mark the first time since June 1, June 6 and June 7 of 2015 that Louisiana tossed three consecutive pitchers that were not on the previous year's roster. Those pitchers were Evan Guillory, Wyatt Marks and Gunner Leger.
Louisiana opens its season on Friday night when it faces Southeastern Louisiana at 6:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats early to participate in a pregame tribute to legendary Louisiana Baseball coach Tony Robichaux.
