Ragin’ Cajuns looking for back-to-back road wins to open Sun Belt play

STATESBORO, Ga. – Coming off a convincing victory over Georgia State on Thursday evening in Atlanta, Louisiana eyes a road sweep to open the 2019-20 conference campaign when it takes on Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. CST on ESPN+.

With five of their first six Sun Belt games away from home, the Ragin' Cajuns got off to a perfect start in league play with a 75-65 win over the Panthers. A win in Saturday's game would give Louisiana back-to-back roads wins in conference play for the first time since the 2017-18 season when the team defeated Georgia State 75-60 on Feb. 8, 2018, and Georgia Southern 58-48 on Feb. 10, 2018.

In the most recent victory over Georgia State, four different Ragin' Cajuns scored in double figures behind Jomyra Mathis' career-high tying 14 points and a career-high 12 points from Kimberly Burton. Andrea Cournoyer (13) and Skyler Goodwin (11) also contributed double-figure performances, while newcomer Caira Wren put in a career-high eight points in the win.

Louisiana relied heavily on its strengths to pull out the win on Thursday, most notably its ability to shoot the ball from deep. Against Georgia State, Louisiana hit 47.1 percent (8-for-17) of its 3-point attempts. Through 12 games, the team is shooting 35.1 percent from long range, the best mark in the Sun Belt.

Georgia Southern enters Saturday's game against Louisiana with a 4-8 overall record and a 1-0 record in Sun Belt play after it defeated ULM, 64-47, on Thursday night in Statesboro. With the victory, the Eagles picked up their first win in a Sun Belt Conference opener in school history.

Jaiden Hamilton led the way for the Eagles in the win, scoring a career-high 16 points against ULM and adding a two boards and two assists. Tatum Barber and Alexis Brown are the team's leading scorers as both are averaging 10.8 points per contest this year.

Saturday will be the 12th meeting between the two schools, with Louisiana leading the all-time series, 9-2. However, the Ragin' Cajuns are just 3-2 in Statesboro, including a 76-58 loss a season ago.
