Ragin’ Cajuns wrap up road swing on Saturday at Texas State
ARLINGTON, Texas – A 12:55 span without a field goal in the middle quarters of Thursday morning's league contest against UTA doomed Louisiana, which fell to the Lady Mavs, 79-52, at the College Park Center.
Â
Trailing seven points after the first quarter, the Ragin' Cajuns could not keep pace with a surging Lady Mavs squad, which shot 53 percent (30-for-57) from the field. Louisiana finished the day with a 30 percent (16-for-53) shooting performance, tied for its lowest offensive output of the season.
Â
Junior Jomyra Mathis and sophomore Brandi Williams led the way with 13 points apiece against the Lady Mavs, with Mathis also pulling down a team-leading six rebounds. Ty'Reona Doucet added nine points of her own and brought down five boards.
Â
Senior Marie Benson powered the way for UTA, scoring 30 points on 10-for-11 shooting and brought down seven boards. Benson was the only Lady Mav to finish the game in double figures.
Â
Williams scored the first three points of the game for Louisiana when she knocked down a baseline triple, but UTA found its groove with a 6-0 run over the next five minutes to open a 12-4 advantage.
Â
Trailing 15-8 after the first quarter, Louisiana fell behind 20-10 before back-to-back buckets from Mathis cut that margin to 22-17 with 6:23 on the clock. However, UTA did not allow a Louisiana field goal over the remainder of the half and used a buzzer-beating layup from Benson to cap off a 10-5 run and give the Lady Mavs a 32-22 lead at the break.
Â
UTA's offense continued to press, opening the second half on a 6-0 run to go ahead 38-22 before Doucet converted two free throws to stop the run. Mathis came alive over the last 3:32 with seven points, but it was not enough to make a significant dent in the Lady Mavs' lead, which sat at 53-36 through three quarters.
Â
The Lady Mavs kept their foot on the gas to open the fourth period, using an 11-4 run in the opening 3:38 to go ahead 64-40 before the Ragin' Cajuns called a timeout. UTA continued to press and ultimately outscored Louisiana, 26-16, in the final quarter to secure the 79-52 victory.
Â
Louisiana returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it wraps up its road swing at Texas State. Tipoff from Strahan Arena is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and ESPN1420.
