LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Women's Tennis program is welcoming a new member to its 2020 roster in sophomore Angel Santiago, who hails from Quezon City, Manila, Philippines.
Santiago, who is immediately eligible this season, started playing tennis when she was six locally in the Philippines and in ITF's. She was also a former Junior Fed Cup Player for the Philippines.
As Santiago's career progressed, she started playing in women's opens and claimed her first open victory when she was just 15 years old. Head coach Stephanie Vallejos took notice of Santiago through a video sent to her by Santiago's coach. Vallejos and Santiago then got connected and the rest was history.
"I always wanted to go here," Santiago said. "As soon as I heard about the school, I looked up everything and fell in love with the school without even getting here."
Now that Santiago is here at Louisiana she is getting excited for the start of the season.
"Aside from winning, I am looking forward to having fun and enjoying every moment with my teammates and coaches," Santiago said. "I want to be the best version of myself, not only me but everyone on the team."
Louisiana Women's Tennis kicks off its season when it hosts Grambling on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m.
