Opening meet for Cajuns is set for Aug. 30 at UNO Opener
LAFAYETTE – With its 2019 season opener set for the end of the month, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns cross country team reported for camp on Monday as head coach Lon Badeaux welcomed back nine returning letterwinners.
Â
The team went through meetings and physicals on Monday before holding its first official team workout on Tuesday. The Ragin' Cajuns will complete the first week of camp with early morning workouts before prepping for the University of New Orleans Cross Country Opener on Aug. 30 at New Orleans' Lake Oaks Park.
Â
Seniors Stanley Limoh and Jonathan Kimutai are the top returning runners on the men's side with sophomore Key Alfred, Conner Meche and Rashid Reese will look to move up in the team rankings for Louisiana. Newcomer Samuel Avants was added as a signee during the off-season with redshirt Solomon Brent, Riley Plunkett and Chandler Burns rounding out the squad.
Â
"We are excited to get the season started," Badeaux said. "We bring in five new runners in the women's side so it will be a very new look and are excited to see them get better each week.
Â
"On the men's side, we return two very decorated seniors and we look forward to their leadership. We also return Key Alfred who looks primed to take the next step as well as one new runner in Samuel Avants. We did lose a couple runners off last year's team, so how we replace that will dictate how much this team can achieve. We have some younger runners who have had good summers, so the development of a solid fifth runner will be key."
Â
Senior Alexa Breaux is the team's most veteran runner on the women's side and will be joined by returning letterwinners Ally McCulley, Alivia Johnson and Kate Ferguson. A batch of talented newcomers were added to the women's side, including local products Rosalie Michot and Meredith Hebert, in-state products Kelly Goff and Lauren Cantrelle and Georgia native Emoni Coleman.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns will compete in four events prior to the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for Nov. 2 in Hampton, Ga. Louisiana will open at UNO on Aug. 30 before competing at the Gerald Richey Invitational (Sept. 14) in Arlington, Texas, the Lake Charles Toyota Cowboy Stampede (Sept. 28) and the Little Rock Open (Oct. 19) prior to the SBC Championships.
