Louisiana Comes Up Short in Defensive Battle with Texas State, 3-2

4/27/2019 8:28:00 PM | Baseball

Saturday’s game saw a combined five earned runs and 16 strikeouts

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana found itself in a tightly contested defensive battle on Saturday afternoon, but it came up just short after Texas State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth inning to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns, 3-2, at Russo Park.

Both pitching staffs were outstanding on Saturday and allowed just five runs in the game, the third time this season in which Louisiana (20-26, 8-12) played in a five-run league game. It is now 1-2 in those contests.

Junior Jack Burk (1-2) had a solid outing despite giving up the three runs, allowing seven hits and striking out two batters in 6.0 innings of work. He was relieved by Austin Perrin, who closed out the final 3.0 innings allowing one hit and fanning three.

Offensively, Orynn Veillon extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI triple, while Handsome Monica also finished the contest with a hit and an RBI. Senior Daniel Lahare was the lone Ragin' Cajun to produce a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the night.

Texas State (30-13, 14-6) opened the scoring in the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead on two singles. Hunter Kasuls then led off the bottom of that same inning with a single and was brought home in the next at bat by Veillon, who cranked a triple to right-center field to cut the lead in half.

Monica tied the game at 2-2 two pitches later, roping a single down the first-base line to score Veillon with no outs. After advancing runners to second and third, Louisiana looked to tack on more runs, but it was unable to capitalize after two strikeouts ended the threat.

The Bobcats scored what went on to be the winning run in the fourth when John Wuthrich touched home on a balk, pushing the visitors ahead, 3-2. Louisiana got runners safely to second in both the fifth and eighth innings, but they were unable to bring either of them home.
