SETTING THE SCENE
No. 8 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball concludes the home portion of its season schedule Friday-Sunday, April 26-28 hosting Coastal Carolina in a three-game Sun Belt series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Â
Louisiana (43-4, 21-0) will honor its 2019 senior class prior to the first pitch of Sunday's contest. The group includes: Lexie Comeaux, Alison Deville, Kara Gremillion and Keeli Milligan.
Â
The weekend series is the first of only two remaining in the regular season. The Ragin' Cajuns have already clinched the SBC championship and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
Â
Louisiana started the season's stretch run on Wednesday with a 7-2 win at Louisiana Tech which extended the team's current winning streak to 20 games.
Â
During the 20-game win streak, which began March 22 at South Alabama, the Ragin' Cajuns are hitting .349, outscoring foes 142-34, have posted 50 extra base hits and Summer Ellyson is 13-0 with a 0.84 ERA.
Â
Coastal Carolina (33-15, 11-10 Sun Belt), similar to Louisiana, can hit for power. The Chanticleers lead the Sun Belt with 74 home runs led by the duo of Kassidy Smith (13) and Courtney Dean (12).
Â
Louisiana seeks to extend its record start to conference play and capture its eighth SBC series win in as many weekends. The program's streak of consecutive league series won, which dates back to March 2013, stands at 53 straight – the longest active streak in the nation.
Â
PARKING ADVISORY
Louisiana Athletics is proud to partner with Festival International, and would like to inform Ragin' Cajuns fans and the general public of parking changes to accommodate the many ongoing events this weekend around the athletics complex.
SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 5-1)
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: Louisiana is anchored on the left side by two of the best infielders in the country in senior third baseman Kara Gremillion and junior shortstop Alissa Dalton – both career .950-plus fielders. Returning starting second baseman Casidy Chaumont and Keeli Milligan have taken turns starting at the position. At first base, returning starter Kourtney Gremillion and Toledo transfer Bailey Curry share time at the position.
Â
Outfield: Texas A&M transfer Sarah Hudek shifted to left field at the start of Sun Belt play (March 8 at Texas State). Texas Tech transfer Raina O'Neal, who sat out due to transfer rules in 2018, is making her Louisiana debut in center field and has started each game at the position. In recent weekends, Lexie Comeaux and Kourtney Gremillion have filled the right field spot when Keeli Milligan started at second base. Morgan Gray and Aeriyl Mass provide a boost with their speed and spend time in right field as a defensive replacement.
Â
Pitchers: Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson is back as Louisiana's lead pitcher. Ellyson, a 20-game winner who ranked Top 40 nationally in all major pitching categories in 2018, is currently the national leader in victories (30) and the Sun Belt's leader in strikeouts (263). Sophomore Carrie Boswell and fifth-year senior Alison Deville have been the first out of the bullpen when Ellyson rests. Sophomore Casey Dixon and freshman Kandra Lamb of Australia add additional depth.
Â
Catchers: Senior Lexie Comeaux and Northwestern State transfer Julie Rawls, converted to the position from the outfield, serve as the Ragin' Cajuns' main catchers. Comeaux fills the designated player role, and occasionally plays in the outfield, in order to keep her bat in the game. Rawls has seen the bulk of the playing time behind the plate in order to continue her development.

NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
- Gerry Glasco's squad achieved its highest national ranking of the season on Tuesday as Louisiana was listed at No. 8 in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN/USA Softball polls.
- The Ragin' Cajuns' 20-game win streak is tied with Arizona and Drake for the second-longest active streak in the nation, trailing only Oklahoma's present 32-game run.
- For the first time since the Sun Belt Conference expanded to a 24-game or more schedule, Louisiana clinched the regular season title with two weekends of league play remaining.
- The 2019 Sun Belt Conference championship marks the 16th overall for Louisiana in the conference's 19-year history of regular season play.
- Louisiana has reached the 40-win plateau for the 21st consecutive season. The Ragin' Cajuns were the second team in the nation to hit the mark, doing so one week after Alabama.
- Summer Ellyson is the first Ragin' Cajuns pitcher since Jordan Wallace in 2013 to claim 30 wins in a season. Other notable names to have reached the mark include: Brooke Mitchell, Melissa Coronado, Cheryl Longeway, Ashley Brignac, Brittany Cuevas and Jordan Wallace
- Over four starts last week Summer Ellyson averaged over two strikeouts per inning, tallying at least seven each time out and reaching double digits twice. She piled up 38 strikeouts over 18 innings in the circle and recorded multiple strikeouts in 14 of the 18 innings worked.
- Last week's efforts landed Summer Ellyson a third consecutive Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week award. She's won the award six times this season, the most since Ashley Brignac picked up seven during the 2011 season.
- Senior pitcher Alison Deville has posted six consecutive scoreless relief efforts dating back to April 10. During the stretch she has limited foes to four hits and struck out 10 over 7-2/3 innings.
- Julie Rawls' run production at Louisiana Tech increased her season RBI total to 49, moving her within one of becoming the first Ragin' Cajun this season to reach 50 RBI.
- Julie Rawls' next home run will mark a new personal best for the Northwestern State transfer. She is tied with Sarah Hudek for the team lead with 10 home runs which matches her career-best output at NSU in 2018.
- Sarah Hudek's 11-game hitting streak is one game shy of tying Alissa Dalton (12 games from March 16-April 6) for the team's longest this season.
- Sarah Hudek finished 6-for-8 at the plate (.750) and reached base in eight of 10 plate appearances last weekend vs. Georgia State. That raised her season average to .364 – the highest mark since March 13 at Nicholls.
- Kara Gremillion's home run at Louisiana Tech marked her 14th extra base hit of the season (10 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs), establishing a new personal single-season high for the senior third baseman (previous was 13 in 2017).
- Entering her final weekend at Lamson Park, Kara Gremillion has started 214 consecutive games at third base. From day one, she has occupied the hot corner for Louisiana's defense.
- Lexie Comeaux's game-high four RBI in the GSU finale increased her season figure to 38, placing her within two of reaching 40 for the second time in her career (posted personal-best 48 in 2017 as a sophomore).
- Keeli Milligan became the Ragin' Cajuns single-season stolen bases record holder last Friday, picking up No. 52 to pass Dorsey Steamer's record 51 set back in 1992.
- Now with 54 stolen bases, Keeli Milligan has matched her personal best recorded as a freshman at Texas A&M in 2016. She's also moving closer to becoming the first-ever Ragin' Cajun to amass 60 stolen bases in a season.
- Since March 20, Alissa Dalton has picked up 10 multiple-hit games and is hitting .508 (33-for-65) which has raised her average from .313 to a team-leading .409.
- Louisiana's offense includes nine players with 30-plus hits, eight with multiple home runs, eight with 20-plus RBI and 10 hitting above .300.
- The Ragin' Cajuns have started fast in 2019, scoring in the first inning 23 times and being the first to light up the scoreboard in 40 of 47 outings.
