All three games will be moved up one day in observance of Easter Sunday
ARLINGTON, Texas – Riding the emotions of a thrilling 6-5 victory on Tuesday night against Louisiana State, the Louisiana Baseball team takes its three-game winning streak to the Lone Star State for a big-time matchup with the league-leading UTA Mavericks.
Â
Game times are set for 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, 6:30 p.m., on Friday and 2 p.m., on Saturday.
Â
The weekend series will not be the first time that Louisiana has gone up against a top team in the Sun Belt as it faced Arkansas State on April 5-6 at Russo Park when the Red Wolves sat atop the West Division. The Ragin' Cajuns went on to take two of the three games in that series after sweeping the Saturday doubleheader.
Â
Louisiana (20-20, 8-7) not only won it most recent Sun Belt series, taking the final two games over South Alabama last weekend, but earned a big in-state victory on Tuesday night after taking down No. 14 Louisiana State, 6-5.Â
Â
Seniors Orynn Veillon and Handsome Monica clinched the midweek win with two big swings in back-to-back plate appearances during the eighth inning in Metairie, sending two balls sailing over the left-field fence. The Ragin' Cajuns have hit 42 homers on the year, ranking them 20th in the NCAA.
Â
Sophomore Hayden Cantrelle has continued to see the ball well and added a hit in Tuesday's contest. He currently leads the team with a .322 batting average (48-for-149) and a .557 slugging percentage, while his 25 stolen bases rank him 14th in the NCAA.
Â
Louisiana will use the same rotation as it did when it faced South Alabama, with left-hander Austin Perrin (4.72 ERA, 3-4) getting the start on Thursday, right-hander Brandon Young (3.64 ERA, 2-3) starting Friday and right-hander Jack Burk (2.95 ERA, 1-0) getting the start on Saturday.
Â
UTA (25-13, 11-4) has been on a tear as of late, winning its last six games with the most recent being a 6-3 decision over No. 19 TCU. With starts in all 38 games, Zac Cook leads the team with a .313 average (47-for-150), four home runs and 30 RBI.
Â
The Mavericks will start right-hander Cade Winquest on Thursday, left-hander Drew Gooch on Friday and right-hander David Moffat on Saturday.
Â
Despite splitting the last 10 meetings with five wins apiece, Louisiana leads the all-time series over UTA, 31-19, and is 14-6 against the Mavericks under head coach Tony Robichaux. The team will be looking for its first win in Arlington since a 19-6 decision on May 1, 2016.
