LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Women's Tennis (6-10, 1-4 SBC) could not hold off the late charging Appalachian State Mountaineers (11-4, 5-0 SBC), falling 4-3 in a Saturday afternoon Sun Belt Conference matchup at Cajun Courts.
Louisiana was led by sophomore Floriane Picaut, who got her 10th win in singles on the season and sophomore Dana Radovanovic, who each gave Louisiana wins at singles at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. In doubles, Louisiana got the doubles point in the second straight match, and third match in four.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana started the match by taking the doubles point from the Mountaineers. First to grab themselves a victory were junior Clara Mantaux and Radovanovic, who won 6-4 over Appalachian State's Maria Jose Zacarias and Heidi Swope, at No. 1.
Clinching the doubles point was the Louisiana pairing of Picaut and freshman AK Harvey, when they defeated Jeannez Daniel and Kate Earnhardt of the Mountaineers, 6-4 at No. 3, putting Louisiana up 1-0 heading into singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Appalachian State quickly answered back in singles, taking the match at No. 4, when freshman Ai Noa Fabre lost to Daniel in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. But Louisiana snatched back the win with a dominating straight set win by Picaut at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3, over Teodora Sevo.
With the score in Louisiana's favor, 2-1, Appalachian State tied things up when Mantaux could not hold off Rebecca Morse's three-set comeback at No. 5, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, evening up the score at 2-2. But Radovanovic would answer for Louisiana, winning her own three-set battle at No. 2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, holding off Earnhardt to put Louisiana back in front.
But unfortunately, the next two matches would fall for Appalachian State, starting with Zacarias winning in another three-set showdown at No. 3, beating freshman Hoda Habib, 7-6(5), 6-7(1), 6-2. Habib did battle throughout the match, battling through a pair of tiebreakers before falling in the third set.
Appalachian State finished the match at No. 6, in yet another three-set match, with Swope beating Louisiana freshman Morgan Forshag, 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4. Forshag did not go down without a fight, battling through to a second-set tiebreaking win, but the Louisiana freshman unfortunately came out on the losing end of the third-set, and Appalachian State came away with a 4-3 win.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana plays its final home match of the 2019 season, when the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers come to Cajun Courts for a Sunday, March 31, 10 a.m. matchup.
