LAFAYETTE – For the eighth straight season Louisiana Men's Tennis (11-3) heads to Corpus Christi, Texas to take part in the 53rd Annual HEB Tournament of Champions, with the tournament opening up on Friday, Feb. 22 and wrapping up the next day on Saturday, Feb. 23.
OPENING AGAINST DEPAUL: On Friday, Louisiana opens up the weekend with a 10 a.m. match against the DePaul Blue Demons (6-4) in the first round of the tournament. It is the third straight season that Louisiana and DePaul will meet in Corpus Christi and the Blue Demons took last season's match in a closely contested meeting, 4-3.
The match will be the fifth meeting between Louisiana and DePaul since 2009, with all five matches being played on neutral sites. Going back to 2014, this will be the fourth time the two have met in Corpus Christi at the HEB Tournament of Champions and Louisiana holds a 3-1 overall record over the previous four meetings.
FULL SLATE OF PROGRAMS: Joining Louisiana and DePaul in Corpus Christi, are six other programs brining the entire amount of sides competing in the tournament to eight teams. Besides Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who is hosting the tournament, the other teams are UTSA; UT-Rio Grande Valley; Tennessee Tech; New Mexico State and fellow Sun Belt Conference side Troy.
BRINGING A NATIONAL RANKING: For the first time since 2014, when Rick Detroot and Jake Wynan earned themselves a national ranking, a doubles team from Louisiana has been ranked in the top-60 nationally. Senior Arthur Libaud and junior Pearse Dolan, following their win over the No. 27 duo in the nation from Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 16, were ranked No. 53 in the nation as a doubles team.
