@RaginCajunsBSB’s Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 6-5 Defeat to No. 23 Texas
2/16/2019 7:46:00 PM | Baseball
Ragin’ Cajuns cannot overcome five-run second inning produced by the Longhorns
Needing two runs to tie the game, senior Daniel Lahare was able to make his way across the plate safely to pull the Ragin' Cajuns within one score, but the home side was unable to push across any additional runs to steal the game.
Lahare finished 2-for-5 at the plate, which included a double, two RBI and a run scored. Fellow senior Handsome Monica also produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 while also scoring a run. Five other Ragin' Cajuns came up with a hit in the contest
Brandon Young took the loss for Louisiana, giving up five runs and six hits in 2.0 innings of work. Sophomore Brock Batty, who relieved Young, was solid in his season debut, going 3.0 innings and allowing just three hits to four strikeouts.
Texas' (2-0) Cole Quintanilla earned the victory for the Longhorns, allowing two hits and striking out two in 2.2 innings of relief. Nico O'Donnell was credited with the save.
Louisiana (0-2) founds itself in trouble in the top half of the second frame when four-straight hits by Texas produced five runs and gave the Longhorns a 5-0 advantage. Needing a quick response, the Ragin' Cajuns answered with back-to-back doubles from Monica and Orynn Veillon to cut into the lead and bring the score to 5-1.
The offense began to find its stride later in the inning when Todd Lott singled to right field to score Veillon. Following an O'Neal Lochridge double and Gavin Bourgeois advancing to first after being hit by a pitch, Lahare hit a clutch single that scored two to cut the deficit to 5-4 before the innings' end.
Both teams' bats went silent until the top of the seventh inning when Texas' Ryan Reynolds hit a homer to add what proved to be an important insurance run and move the score to 6-4.
Lahare put Louisiana in good position in the bottom of the ninth, doubling to center field and advancing to third on an error before being brought home during the next at bat by Hunter Kasuls, who flied out to right field. However, the one run was not enough as Texas hung on for a 6-5 victory in game two.
The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Louisiana has named Dalton Horton the starter for the series finale, while Texas' Coy Cobb was tapped as the starter for the Longhorns. The game can be streamed live at RaginCajuns.com/Watch.
