Louisiana Men's Tennis dominated Alcorn State, before battling to the bitter end against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in the second match of the day

LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Men's Tennis (10-3) began the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational by splitting the first day, starting with a dominating win over Alcorn State (0-12) 4-0, before being narrowly defeated by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-3), 4-2, to go 1-1 during a busy day at Cajun Courts.

Louisiana was led by freshmen Jan Galka and Kacper Dworak, who as a team were 2-0 in doubles. Sophomore Dominik Koenig clinched Louisiana's win over Alcorn State to cap off the dominating performance in Louisiana's first match of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED (FIRST MATCH): In the first doubles match, at No. 1 doubles Galka and Dworak took down Jonatan Parat and Stojan Stojanovski, 6-1.  While Louisiana's pairing of junior Jamie Fraser and sophomore Piece Gilheany, playing No. 2 doubles, sealed the point for Louisiana with a commanding 6-0 win over Alcorn's team of Ivan Matas and S. Santy.

Louisiana swept through singles, clinching all three needed for the dominating win in straight sets to lock up the victory. At No. 6 singles, junior Silvio Cocito-Monoc defeated Kareem Bowe 6-0, 6-1 for Louisiana's first win.

Dworak then knocked off Matas 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, putting Louisiana one point from the win.  Clinching the win and what was Louisiana's fifth straight victory was Koenig, who defeated Santiago Rocca 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to lock up the 4-0 win for the Ragin' Cajuns.

HOW IT HAPPENED (SECOND MATCH): Louisiana was able to grab the doubles point to start the match off with a 1-0 lead, but Louisiana had to battle to get the point with doubles going the distance having all three matches played out.  First to win for Louisiana were Galka and Dworak, playing at No. 2, who defeated Corpus Christi's Okkie Kellerman and Thibaut Frumholz 6-3, earning the Louisiana pair its second team doubles win of the day.

Notching the doubles point for an early Louisiana lead were juniors Elio Lago and his partner Fraser, who had to win a tiebreaker in a thrilling 7-6 (7-5), at No. 3, Louisiana victory over Carlos Pedrosa and Kyohei Yamanaka.

In singles, Louisiana's lone winner was senior Arthur Libaud, defeating Kellerman in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.  That got Louisiana up to a 2-0 lead with Libaud's match being the first to be completed.

Lago fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 to Pedrosa and Dworak lost at No. 6 in a hotly contested three-set match against Thibault Frumholz, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, and the two wins by AMCC tied the match up at 2-2.  Fraser battled at No. 5, pushing a straight-set loss as far as he could, falling 7-5, 6-4 to Yamanaka to give AMCC a 3-2 lead.

At No. 1 AMCC clinched the match, but Louisiana junior Pearse Dolan did not go down without a fight and did not give the Islanders the win easily.  Dolan won the first set, before dropping the second in a tight contest.

In the third set both Dolan and the eventual winner, Tomas Rodrigues, went back and forth throughout the set before Rodrigues pulled away in the final stages to win the match, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, locking up AMCC's 4-2 win.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns to Cajun Courts for another home bout against Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 16, with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m.
