Gunner Leger

@RaginCajunsBSB Falls to Texas, 3-1, in Extra Innings on Opening Night

2/15/2019 11:39:00 PM | Baseball

Gunner Leger goes five innings and fans four in his return to the mound

LAFAYETTE – All signs pointed to Louisiana locking up an Opening Night victory late in the game, but the 23rd-ranked Texas Longhorns stalled a bases-loaded opportunity by the Ragin' Cajuns and scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 3-1 victory on Friday.

The Cajuns (0-1) had two different chances in the bottom of the ninth to plate the winning run after loading up the bases, but could not find the hit they needed to come away on top.

Returning to the mound for the first time in over 600 days, senior Gunner Leger wowed in his five innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters. His five innings of action were the most he had thrown in a competitive game since going seven innings on May 26, 2017 at Georgia Southern.

Offensively, Hunter Kasuls and Brennan Breaux led the charge with two singles apiece, while Handsome Monica, who also made his return behind the plate after missing the 2018 season, recorded the team's lone RBI.

Texas (1-0) scored the first run of the ballgame in the seventh inning when DJ Petrinsky, who singled early on in the inning, scored from second following a ground-rule double by Michael McCann to go ahead, 1-0.

Having been shutdown by Texas' Bryce Elder, who pitched eight innings and struck out nine batters, the offense came alive in the bottom half of the final inning when Breaux and Daniel Lahare hit back-to-back singles to put two on with nobody out.

With the bases loaded following Hayden Cantrelle being hit by a pitch, Monica hit a grounder which scored Breaux from third to knot the game up at 1-1. Kasuls then had an opportunity later in the frame to clinch the game with the bases loaded, but flied out to right field to end the inning.

Texas plated its two winning runs with two outs in the top of the 10th inning when Austin Todd hit a ball past a diving Gavin Bourgeois, which went on to seal the game.

The Ragin' Cajuns and the Longhorns resume their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Russo Park. Brandon Young will make his first career start for Louisiana, while Blair Henley will take the mound for Texas.
