Wilson ties season-high with 16 points

TEMPE, Ariz. – Romello White posted a double-double with a game-high 19 points along with 14 rebounds and Arizona State took advantage of early turnovers and held off the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 77-65, in a non-conference men's basketball game on Saturday at Desert Financial Arena.

Rob Edwards added 17 points with Remy Martin chipping in 15 as Arizona State (6-2) used its pressure defense to score 18 points in the first half off 13 turnovers by Louisiana (5-4), which was playing without redshirt freshman Kobe Julien (knee).

The Sun Devils pulled away from an early 12-8 contest after P.J. Hardy drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 15:16 remaining in the first half. Martin scored on a jumper in the lane and added a pair of free throws before Edwards scored on a second chance for an 18-8 lead at the 11:55 mark.

A free throw by Kimani Lawrence gave Arizona State a 33-19 lead with 2:48 remaining in the first half and the Sun Devils took a 38-26 lead into halftime on a layup by Taeshon Cherry just before the buzzer.

Arizona State extended its lead to 55-36 on a basket by Alonzo Verge, Jr., before the Ragin' Cajuns mounted a comeback.

Dou Gueye, who scored all of his 11 points in the second half, scored a pair of buckets in a 7-0 run that would get Louisiana to within 55-43 with 10:56 remaining. After the Sun Devils pushed the lead to 67-51 on a layup by Cherry, Louisiana battled back with an 8-2 run, getting as close as 69-59 on a 3-pointer by Cedric Russell with 3:37 left.

But that would be as close as Louisiana would get as a dunk by Martin and a layup by Martin would extend Arizona State's lead to 73-59.

Mylik Wilson matched a season-high for Louisiana with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Russell added 16 points for the Ragin' Cajuns, who finished 21-for-49 (43 percent) from the floor while holding Arizona State to 28-for-67 (42 percent) from the floor.

Louisiana will take the week off for final exams before resuming its three-game roadtrip on Saturday (Dec. 14) at in-state rival Louisiana Tech.
