Saturday’s game will be the team’s third trip to Texas this season
LAFAYETTE – With a successful first quarter of the season in the books, Louisiana Women's Basketball will take its five-game winning streak on the road when it heads to The Lone Star State for the third time this season for a meeting with North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tipoff from The Super Pit in Denton, Texas is set for 3 p.m.
Â
Despite the team's only loss coming in the state of Texas, a 77-73 setback at Sam Houston State, the Ragin' Cajuns (6-1) will be looking for their third-straight road win of the season after claiming victories against New Orleans (Nov. 21) and Lamar (Nov. 25).
Â
The 2019-20 campaign has gotten off a hot start, with the team's 6-1 record its best since 2015-16 when it went 25-10. In its most recent contest, Louisiana used a balanced offense and stout defense to hold off in-state foe Xavier (La.), 62-49.
Â
Junior Jomyra Mathis and freshman Alexandria Goodly scored 10 points against the Gold Nuggets, leading 12 Ragin' Cajuns who finished the game with a basket. Kristen Daniels was the team's leading rebounder with seven boards on Monday night.
Â
Despite not playing in the game, sophomore Brandi Williams remains the top scorer on the season, averaging 16.0 points per contest. She is joined in double figures by Ty'Reona Doucet, who is averaging 12.6 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds in the squad's seven games.
Â
North Texas will be playing in its ninth game when it welcomes Louisiana to The Super Pit and owns a 3-5 overall record in 2019. Most recently, the Mean Green played in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu, Hawaii, where it defeated Hawaii, 66-60, and dropped two close games to nationally ranked opponents in Texas (63-57) and N.C. State (76-65).
Â
Senior Anisha George is averaging a double-double for the Mean Green through eight games, producing 13.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Destinee McDowell has also been solid for North Texas, averaging 9.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.
Â
Louisiana and North Texas will be meeting for the 37th time dating back to 1974 when the programs face off on Saturday afternoon, including a 1-2 mark under head coach Garry Brodhead.
Â
In their last meeting on March 8, 2013, the Ragin' Cajuns earned an 80-74 overtime victory over the Mean Green in the Sun Belt Tournament, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The team is seeking its first win in Denton since Jan. 1, 2011, when it won, 65-54.
