Time Expires on Louisiana’s Rally, Mean Green Holds on in Denton

@RaginCajunsWBB holds North Texas without a field goal in final five minutes in bid to extend win streak

DENTON, Texas – By holding North Texas without a field goal over the final five minutes, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball nearly erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter during a valiant comeback attempt on Saturday at The Super Pit.

However, time ran out and the Mean Green held on for a 69-66 win which snapped Louisiana's five-game winning streak.

Trailing 65-54 entering the final media timeout with 4:31 remaining, the Ragin' Cajuns (6-2) found themselves down two points after an Andrea Cournoyer basket with 31 seconds showing. It was still a one-possession game after North Texas (4-5) converted only one free throw with 10 seconds left, but the Mean Green intercepted the inbounds pass after Louisiana advanced to ball to the front court with a timeout.

The hosts hit their freebies this time, creating just enough distance at 68-63, which proved critical as Kimberly Burton would convert a triple with one second showing.

Brandi Williams led Louisiana in points (18) and rebounds (7). She triggered the late-game rally by scoring the first five points, using an old-fashioned three-point play at 3:28 and a layup a minute later.

Ty'Reona Doucet generated 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, tying Williams for the game-high in field goals made. Doucet collected her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season and highest output since scoring 21 at New Orleans (Nov. 21).

The Ragin' Cajuns shot 45.8 percent for the contest (27-of-59) and was 6-of-12 from three-point range led by two triples apiece from Williams and Diamond Morrison.

The Mean Green benefited from a pair of 50-plus percent shooting efforts, key to stretching out its lead in both the first and third quarter. North Texas held a 36-28 advantage in rebounds and produced 15 fast-break points.

The two teams traded big scoring quarters in the first half – North Texas with a 20-12 edge in the opening stanza and Louisiana a 22-15 advantage in the second quarter – and the result was a 35-34 Mean Green lead at the break.

North Texas turned up its defensive intensity coming out of the break holding the Ragin' Cajuns to three points halfway through the third quarter. Meanwhile the hosts made five field goals during the span to open a 46-37 lead, and ignite a 53.3 percent shooting quarter.

Williams' second triple of the evening at 1:07 of the third quarter brought the deficit back into single digits at 51-44. The Mean Green found key baskets, such as N'yah Boyd's three-pointer with 8:24 remaining in the game for a 58-48 lead, to protect the lead.

The Louisiana defense forced four turnovers in the final five-minute push and the offense converted three second-chance attempts in the never-quit effort.

Louisiana takes a break from play next week as the University administers final exams for the fall 2019 semester. The next contest occurs on Monday, Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. when Mississippi State visits the Cajundome for the annual Education Game.
