Louisiana’s Comeback Bid Falls Short at Sam Houston State, 77-73

Ty’Reona Doucet notches first double-double of the season in the loss

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Louisiana cut a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to 75-73 with less than 10 seconds to play, but it was unable to overcome clutch free throws by Sam Houston State late in the game as the Ragin' Cajuns' comeback attempt fell short to the Bearkats, 77-73, on Sunday afternoon.

The home team looked to be running away with the game late, but a 10-4 run capped by a monster 3-pointer by Andrea Cournoyer with nine seconds remaining on the clock pulled Louisiana to within 75-73 before Sam Houston State hit two free throws to seal the game.

Junior Ty'Reona Doucet had a monster outing off the bench, recording her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Brandi Williams also notched 18 points as a starter and added four boards.

As a team, Louisiana shot 38 percent (23-of-61) from the field, but a 1-for-7 night from long range and a 26-for-38 mark from the charity stripe hindered the Ragin' Cajuns' offensive production.

After a slow first start to the opening quarter, Louisiana jumped out on an 8-0 run with the help of four points from Williams to go ahead, 10-5. The lead grew to six points, but Sam Houston State battled back to cut the advantage to 20-17 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bearkats pulled within as close as 26-25 at the 5:02 mark of the second quarter, but the Ragin' Cajuns rattled off six-straight points to extend the lead to 32-25 following a made layup by Skyler Goodwin with 2:57 to play in the half.

Amber Leggett threatened Louisiana's lead with less than a minute to play after pulling up and draining a jumper, but a made jumper on the other end of the floor by Williams with 26 seconds to play sent the Ragin' Cajuns into the locker room with a 37-34 lead.

Sam Houston State (2-0) stormed out of the gate in the second half, using a 10-2 run to go ahead 44-39 at the 5:05 mark of the third quarter. The home side held a small lead for the remainder of the period until Leggett hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to put the Bearkats up 56-50 with 10 minutes to play.

Leggett hit another jumper with 6:26 remaining to put the Bearkats up 64-53, nearly putting the game out of reach. However, a 6-0 run over the next minute pulled the game within reach.

The Ragin' Cajuns battled over the remaining five minutes, but the Bearkats made seven free throws in the final minute, including two by Faith Cook with three seconds to play, to seal the 77-73 win for the Bearkats.

Louisiana returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 14, when it welcomes McNeese State to the Cajundome for a 6 p.m. tip on ESPN+. The contest will be Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. Faculty and staff can show their Cajun Card at the Cajundome box office to receive a free ticket to the game and purchase more at a discounted rate.
