LAFAYETTE – The busy week continues for Louisiana Women's Basketball (5-14, 3-5 SBC) with a Thursday night matchup on Jan. 31, when the Appalachian State Mountaineers (10-8, 4-3 SBC) come to the CAJUNDOME for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
Â
HOW TO WATCH/LISTEN/FOLLOW: Thursday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Dan McDonald (PxP) and Lawana Stokes (analyst) handling the call, and the link to find the game can be found by clicking here. Steve Peloquin will handle the radio call, with the game being broadcast on ESPN 1420AM. Live stats will be provided by Louisiana Athletics and they can be found by clicking here.
PREVIEWING THE GAME: Louisiana and Appalachian State last met on the hardwood in the two teams only meeting during the 2017-18 season, with Louisiana coming away with a 61-45 win. Since Louisiana will be making the trip north on Mar. 2, this will be the first time since the 2015-16 season that Louisiana and Appalachian State will meet twice in the same year.
All-time Louisiana leads 4-2, and the Ragin' Cajuns have never lost a game at home, holding a 3-0 advantage over the Mountaineers. Louisiana has also won the previous two meetings between the two programs, and a win on Thursday would stretch that streak to three games.
REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS GAME: Louisiana lost its third straight game with a 76-61 loss to UT Arlington, in a rare Tuesday, Sun Belt Conference game, the first since a Tuesday matchup against ULM on Feb. 2, 2016. Louisiana was done in by a late run from the Lady Mavericks, ending a late charge from Louisiana short of the goal of completing the comeback.
Sophomore guard Skyler Goodwin recorded her first career double-double, grabbing 10 points and 10 rebounds in the process, and freshman guard Brandi Williams added a team-high 13 points. Freshman guard Diamond Morrison tossed in 10 points of her own to give Louisiana three scorers in double figures, but the Ragin' Cajuns could not outscore the Lady Mavs en route to dropping the game.
GOODWIN'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Goodwin recorded her first career double-double in Louisiana's loss to UT Arlington, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds are a season-high and ties a career-high that was set at Georgia Southern on Feb. 10, 2018.
HIGH FLYING FRESHMEN: Williams and freshman guard Andrea Cournoyer have been scoring machines over the first month of conference play, each averaging double-figures in Sun Belt play. With Williams averaging 14.0 ppg., and AC averaging 11.0 ppg., making them the top two scoring freshmen in Sun Belt Conference play.
NON-CONFERENCE DOUCET SPECIAL: Sophomore center Ty'Doucet was extremely consistent during the non-conference portion the season. She averaged a double-double, scoring 14.8 points per game and she grabbed 11.2 rebounds per game. Among the conference, Doucet was the only player who averaged a double-double during the non-conference season.
WILLIAMS HAS IMPRESSED: Williams has been impressive through Louisiana's first 19 games, scoring 11.8 points per game, the second most on the team, while shooting .400 percent from the field. The 11.8 ppg., rank Williams second on the team in scoring and when looking at the Sun Belt Conference, Williams is the leading scorer among freshmen.
LOUISIANA FRESHMEN HAVE BEEN KEY: Louisiana's four freshmen have played key parts on the court over the Ragin' Cajuns' 18 games played so far. Louisiana's freshmen have averaged 28.9 points per game total, which is just under half of the 60.6 points per game that Louisiana is averaging as a team and the four freshmen are shooting .369 percent playing a key part the team shooting percentage of .377.
DISHING GOODWIN: Goodwin has been moving the ball with efficiency during Louisiana's eight games of conference play, racking up 17 total assists in conference play and that gives her an average of 2.1 assists per game. Goodwin opened conference play with a career-high six assists at Arkansas State on Jan. 3.
WHAT THE MOUNTAINEERS BRING: Appalachian State comes to the CAJUNDOME having dropped its previous game vs. Little Rock, 74-59, on Jan. 26. But before dropping that game to the Trojans, App State had won its previous three games, meaning that the Mountaineers come into the matchup with Louisiana having won three out of its previous four games.
Appalachian State rebounds the ball near the top of the conference, ranking third in rebounding margin (+5.6) and fourth in total rebounds (786). What the Mountaineers do best in the conference is grab defensive rebounds, averaging a Sun Belt best 29.4 defensive rebounds per game, and a conference best .739 defensive rebounding percentage.
Madi Stacy is leading the Mountaineers in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game, while Pre Stanley is averaging just over 10 points per game sitting at 10.1 points per game. Story's 12.7 points per game puts her 15th in the conference in scoring, and she is getting most of her scoring from the conference's leader in assists, Ashley Polacek who is averaging a Sun Belt best 5.2 assists per game.
Helping Appalachian State control the boards is the conference's leader in rebounds, Bayley Plummer, who is averaging 11.6 rebounds per game, the only player in the Sun Belt averaging double-figure rebounds. Plummer sits first in defensive rebounds (8.4 per game) and fourth in offensive rebounds (3.2 per game).
