Louisiana swept the day with a win over Southern and Jackson State to get the 2019 season started
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Women's Tennis (2-0) made a strong opening statement to their 2019 season, taking down Southern (0-2) and Jackson State (0-1), both by a score of 7-0, in a season opening doubleheader at Cajun Courts.
Juniors Clara Mantaux and Marina Rodriguez Garcia, along with sophomores Dana Radovanovic, Floriane Picaut led the way for Louisiana, each getting two singles wins on the day. While freshmen Hoda Habib and Ai Noa Fabre, and junior Milena Achlamov and sophomore Morgan Forshag each added wins in the both matches as Louisiana got its season off to a solid start.
Garcia and Radovanovic cliniched the doubles point when they took down the Southern pairing of D'jeri Raymond and Stephanie Mbava by a score of 6-3. Finishing the doubles sweep for Louisiana was Picaut and Fabre's hard fought, 7-6 (4) win over Tanaka Chakanyuka and Rufaro Chirewa, giving Louisiana a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Louisiana continued its momentum with two singles wins to extend its lead to 3-0 when, Garcia defeated King 6-0, 6-0 and Fabre topping Munyulwa 6-0, 6-4 to push Louisiana on the brink of clinching the match.
Clinching the victory for Louisiana was Radovanovic's straight set 6-3, 6-1 win over Chakanyuka. Rounding out Louisiana's controlling win was Picaut's 6-2, 6-0 win over Chirewa, Habib's win, 6-2,6-1, over Mbaya and Mantaux's straight set 6-2, 6-2, victory over Raymond to finish the 7-0 sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED (VS. JACKSON STATE): Picaut and Garcia opened up doubles with a 6-1 win over Jackson State's Lucia Placidi and Lucia Solis. Clinching the doubles point for Louisiana was Radovanovic and Mantaux who knocked off Jackson State's Oni Jones and Lily Zhang, 6-2, for the second doubles win.
Louisiana's first singles victory came when Forshag, took down Placidi in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Garcia then followed up Forshag's win with a straight set win over Jones, 6-0, 6-2.
Louisiana clinched the victory with the fourth point coming from Achlamov topping Ariel Dickson 6-1, 6-2. Putting Louisiana up 5-0 was Picaut's victory over Zhang 7-5, 6-0.
Radovanovic locked up her second singles win of the day when she took down Solis 7-6, 6-1. Finishing the match and making it a 7-0 victory for Louisiana was Mantaux's big comeback win, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, against Nina Zhang. Mantaux dropped the first set, but she dug deep and came stroming back over the next two sets to put an exclamation mark on Louisiana's day.
