Louisiana got its first win over a Power Five program since 2012.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time since 2012 Louisiana Men's Tennis (1-1) knocked off a program from a Power Five conference when, after a three-set clinching win from junior Jamie Fraser, in its second match of the day at the Florida State Invitational the Ragin' Cajuns took down the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-2, on its way to going 1-1 during the first day in Tallahassee, Fla.
Powered by singles wins from juniors Elio Lago and Fraser, along with freshmen Jan Galka and Marko Vujic's first-career win, Louisiana carried the momentum of winning the doubles point to take the match. The last time that Louisiana took down a program from one of the Power Five conferences was on Mar. 2, 2012 when Louisiana beat then-ranked No. 64 Oklahoma State, 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. North Florida): Louisiana began the FSU Invite with a matchup against the defending Atlantic Sun Conference, North Florida Ospreys. Louisiana dropped the doubles point when the duo of Galka and Vujic lost 6-4 and the Louisiana duo of Lago and freshman Pierce Gilheany fell 6-2.
In singles Louisiana did snag one win, when senior Arthur Libaud got his first win of the season when he took down UNF's Nilo Duarte in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7). But junior Pearse Dolan fell 6-1, 6-4, Lago dropped his match 6-4, 6-1 and Galka fell 7-6 (8), 6-3 to concede the match to North Florida and move into a meeting with Nebraska.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Nebraska): The Ragin' Cajuns began its path to the first win of 2019 by taking the doubles point when Libaud and Dolan took down Toby Boyer and Micah Klousia, 6-4. Galka and Vujic followed up the first win with a win of their own, taking down Chris Dean and Isaac Nortey 6-3, giving Louisiana a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Vujic started Louisiana off with his first-career singles win by taking down William Gleason in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to make it 2-0 Louisiana. Lago then put Louisiana up 3-0, when he took down Dean in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Dolan fell to Boyer, 6-3, 7-6 (9), followed by Libaud falling to Victor Moreno Lozano, 7-6 (9), 6-3 making the score 3-2 with Louisiana still knocking on the door for victory. But Fraser stepped up to the plate and in a big-time comeback stormed back to seal Louisiana's win in a three-set battle.
Dropping the first set, 4-6, to Nortey, Fraser came out and dominated the second set taking it 6-1 to even up the match. Fraser then controlled the action in the third and final set, coming away with a 6-3 win to come away with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win to lock up Louisiana's first win of the 2019 season.
