@RaginCajunsWBB Gets First Conference Win, 57-54, Over Georgia State

1/10/2019 10:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Sophomore Ty'Reona Doucet scored 20-plus points for the fourth time this season to power Louisiana to its first Sun Belt win of the season.

LAFAYETTE – Powered by a strong start, and sophomore center Ty'Reona Doucet's 23 points, Louisiana Women's Basketball (3-11, 1-2 SBC) got its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season, snapping a nine-game losing streak in the process, taking down the Georgia State Panthers (7-7, 1-2 SBC), 57-54, Thursday night at the CAJUNDOME.

Doucet led the way with her fourth 20-point game of the season, finishing with 23 points and seven rebounds.  While sophomore guard Jomyra Mathis scored a career-high 14 points, 13 of which came in the second half, to power Louisiana to victory.

Defensively Louisiana was strong on the perimeter, holding Georgia State to 28.6 percent from beyond the arc and 32 percent from the field overall.  While on the glass, the Ragin' Cajuns were strong outrebounding the Panthers 36-to-28. HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): Louisiana came out on a tear, going on a 12-0 run that was kicked off by freshman Brandi Williams' three-point basket just under one minute into the game.  It was the best start to a game all season long for the Ragin' Cajuns and Georgia State did not score a basket until there was only just three minutes left in the quarter.

With 2:19 to go in the period, Doucet hit a free-throw to put the score at 15-3, but Georgia State's Jada Lewis hit back-to-back baskets over the final minute of the quarter, to draw Georgia State within eight points to put the score at 15-7 in favor of Louisiana.

Georgia State cut into Louisiana's lead with a 10-2 run through the middle of the second quarter, led by Lewis' two three pointers, and with 6:34 left in the half the score sat at 19-16 with Louisiana still holding the lead.  Back-to-back baskets from Lewis again, pulled the Panthers within one-point of Louisiana, and with 3:11 left in the half Louisiana led 26-25.

But the Ragin' Cajuns were strong down the final three minutes, powered by Mathis' four points over the stretch, eight points total in the period, and Louisiana took a five-point, 34-29 lead into the break.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): Georgia State came out to start the second half and tied the game for the first time, thanks to a quick 5-0 run and K.K. Williams' three-point basket at 8:49 tied things up at 34-34.  But Louisiana answered and pushed its lead back to six points thanks to back-to-back baskets from Doucet and at 6:28 Louisiana led 40-34.

The Panthers again cut into Louisiana's lead, getting within one point of the Ragin' Cajuns on a Kierra Henry three pointer at 3:40.  Louisiana then responded by stretching its lead once again, and a basket from Mathis at 2:42, followed by two free throws from Georgia State's Shaq Miller-McCray, put the score at 45-41.

Louisiana took that four-point lead into the final quarter, with neither team scoring a basket over the final two minutes of the third quarter.

Over the first five minutes of the final quarter, Louisiana pushed its lead back to eight points, with Louisiana getting baskets from freshman guard Andrea Cournoyer, Mathis and Doucet over the five-minute stretch, and with 5:18 left in the game Louisiana led 54-46.  But Georgia State would not go away, and they eventually cut Louisiana's lead down to 56-52 with 1:25 left to go.

With Louisiana up by only two points, and Georgia State having just hit a layup with 1:07 left in the game, Williams went to the free-throw line, with just 11 second left.  She hit one-of-two at the line giving Louisiana a three-point lead, 57-54.
Georgia State then had a chance to tie the game, but a three-point attempt from Georgia State's Henry clanked off the rim and was rebounded by Williams with three seconds left in the game, and that rebound locked up Louisiana's hard fought 57-54 victory over the Panthers. GAME NOTES: Doucet had her fourth 20-point game of the season, finishing with 24 points on 10-for-16 shooting; Mathis finished with a career-high 14 points (6-for-10 from the field) all off the bench; Louisiana finished 5-for-10 from beyond the arc (50 percent) giving Louisiana its best three-point shooting percentage on the season and the first time Louisiana has hit at least 50 percent from beyond the arc, with at least 10 attempts, since shooting 54 percent at ULM on Feb. 3, 2018.
