Louisiana narrowly misses extending No. 16 USC to a fourth set

SAN DIEGO – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball fell just short of extending its match against 16th-ranked USC on Friday at the SDSU/USD Challenge.

The Ragin' Cajuns (7-5) and Trojans (7-3) battled through 12 ties and a pair of lead changes in the third set. Kills from Desiree Johnson and Dree'Ana Abram allowed Louisiana to keep pace in the late stages, drawing ties at 20-and 21-all.

USC, though, was able to fend off Louisiana's push, winning the final three rallies to complete the 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-22) victory.

Louisiana forced USC to dig out of an 8-5 deficit in the opening set, then it wasn't until a four-point run, which snapped a tie at 10-10, that the Trojans were able to seize control.

The Trojans' 2-0 match lead wasn't assured until a 5-0 run opened a 19-12 margin in the second stanza. The Ragin' Cajuns applied pressure when Abram, Johnson and Nia Antoine landed kills in succession to slice the USC lead to 14-12.

Friday's match marked the first of two outings against nationally ranked foes this weekend for the Ragin' Cajuns who will face No. 23 San Diego on Saturday.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS

The Ragin' Cajuns out-blocked the Trojans by a 6-3 margin, posting four of the blocks in the second set. Abram led the way with three blocks (0 BS, 3 BA) while Antoine and Tia Smith each had a hand in two.

Sydney Davis' team-high 10 digs represented her 11th match in double figures this season and 86th occurrence overall in her career.
