Men's Tennis Hits The Road For Two Matches

3/9/2018 11:29:00 AM | Men's Tennis

Louisiana will face Southern Miss and New Orleans through the upcoming weekend.

LAFAYETTE – After a weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas at the 52nd annual HEB Tournament of Champions the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team remains on the road with a weekend swing, visiting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday, Mar. 10 and the University of New Orleans Privateers on Sunday, Mar. 11.

LAGO HAS BEEN ON FIRE: Over the past month sophomore Elio Lago has been setting the courts on fire having won, in singles, his last eight straight matches, and 10 out of his last 11.  During that stretch his record has improved to 11-6, he's only dropped four sets, and he's won 20 sets overall during the stretch.

DOLAN AND GILHEANY MAKE QUITE THE PAIR: Sophomore Pearse Dolan and freshman Pierce Gilheany have been just about unstoppable in doubles going 7-1 together, and they've won their past two matches after starting 5-0 on the season.  Dolan alone is 10-1 in doubles and when combining his singles record he sits at 20-5.  Gilheany's record in doubles is 7-2 making his combined record 10-5.

HEB IN REVIEW: Louisiana went to the HEB Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, dropping two matches, to UTSA (4-2) and DePaul (4-3) before having their final match rained out.  Lago won two matches over the weekend in singles, and Dolan and Gilheany paired up to win both of their doubles matches.

WHAT THE GOLDEN EAGLES BRING: Southern Miss enters at 9-2 on the season and they've won their last five straight matches, six out of the last seven.  And in the last three matches the Golden Eagles have won their matches without dropping a single point winning all three 7-0.

Louisiana and Southern Miss have played each other at least once over the past seven seasons, with the Cajuns going 6-1 during that stretch.  The Golden Eagle's win last season was the first for Southern Miss in six seasons.  It's the first visit to Hattiesburg, Miss., and the Cajuns haven't lost their since 2009.

WHAT THE PRIVATEERS BRING: New Orleans enters the match with the Cajuns sitting at 4-3, but they've won their past two matches.  They opened the season with the Miami Hurricanes, lost 4-0, but they bounced back to win their next two matches.

It's the first time the Cajuns have visited New Orleans, La., since a win in 2016 and the Cajuns have won the last four out of five matches, having lost last season's matchup against the Privateers.  It's the third time the two teams have met in the past three years and the sixth time in five seasons the two have matched up.

DONATE AND EAT: Next Friday, Mar. 16, the Cajuns return to Cajun Courts, for a matchup with UT Rio Grande Valley.  For the match the first 50 fans will receive a free serving of Gumbo and Jambalaya as a part of the Cajuns Gumbo and Jambalaya Night.  Also, fans are encouraged to bring canned goods as the Cajuns will again be teaming up with the FoodNet Food Bank of Lafayette to hold a Canned Goods Food Drive.
