LAFAYETTE – On Tuesday, Mar. 6, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team will wrap up a three-match home stand with a 4 p.m. match at Cajun Courts against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
LAST TIME OUT: In the Cajuns first matchup against a fellow Sun Belt Conference opponent, Louisiana came just short of getting their eighth win at home when they lost to the South Alabama Jaguars, 4-2. It was only their second loss at home, with it having been over a month, (Feb. 4 vs. Louisiana Tech) since they last dropped a match at Cajuns Courts.
DREW TACKLES A NATIONAL RANKING: Playing No. 1 singles, senior Kelly Drew beat USA's Alexandria Stiteler, who's nationally ranked No. 90, in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. She battled through a tiebreaker in the first set, sending a message to Stiteler that she was here to play. Drew carried that tone into the second set where she pushed through, maintaining control of the match, to get a big career win. It was Drew's second straight win, both of which have been straight sets, and it improved her 2018 singles spring record to 5-3.
WHAT THE GOLDEN EAGLES BRING: Southern Miss enters the match sitting at 10-3, having won their last three matches, and they haven't lost on the road since they opened the season at TCU on Jan. 19. The two teams have played eight straight seasons, making this the ninth straight season the two teams have faced off. Louisiana has dropped the past four games against Southern Miss, with their last win against the Golden Eagles being in 2013 and the last time they won at home was in 2012.
