SETTING THE SCENE
21st-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball starts the second half of the season on the road in Troy, Ala., facing the Trojans in a three-game Sun Belt series Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25.
Â
Louisiana (18-6, 5-1 Sun Belt) and Troy (17-12, 3-3 Sun Belt) kick off the weekend set with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The series concludes with a Noon single game on Sunday.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns, winners of five straight, enter the series coming off a solid performance at the plate last weekend in which the team produced 20 runs off 29 hits and excelled in two-out situations against Appalachian State.
Â
Louisiana also arrives in Troy with an active string of consecutive shutouts pitched. The squad's pitching and defense strung together four straight shutouts on last week's homestand.
Â
The Troy series marks Louisiana's second appearance on the opposition's home turf. The Ragin' Cajuns claimed 2-of-3 meetings in the season's first true road games at Coastal Carolina back on March 10-11.
Â
Fans can listen to the entire series on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Acadiana region and worldwide on the ESPN 1420 app. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Â
SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 34-5)
• Ragin' Cajuns and Trojans are meeting in their 13th Sun Belt series. Louisiana claimed the series victory each of the previous 12 occurrences.
• Louisiana has an active 8-game series win streak which began after Troy rallied to win the 2015 series opener at Lamson Park.
• Louisiana holds a 13-3 edge in meetings at the Troy Softball Complex, having won the last seven matchups (dates back to second game of March 24, 2012 doubleheader).
• Two programs first met in a doubleheader at Lamson Park on April 18, 1997. Series resumed when Troy joined the Sun Belt in 2006.
Â
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: The left side is anchored by veteran third baseman Kara Gremillion and sophomore transfer Alissa Dalton (Oklahoma) at shortstop, both preseason All-Sun Belt selections. The duo has combined for 88 assists and only seven errors in a combined 140 chances. On the right side, Kourtney Gremillion (Kara's sister) covers first base while freshman Casidy Chaumont has claimed the starter's role at second base following the season-ending injury to JUCO transfer Brittany Holland.
Â
Outfield: Senior Kelli Martinez, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, is patrolling left field for the second straight season. Redshirt freshman Aeriyl Mass has received the majority of the starts in center field and continues to anchor the defense in that area. Senior transfer Brittany Rodriguez (Lamar) returned to the right field corner at the Judi Garman Classic and is expected to remain there. Fellow senior transfer Kalyn Watts (Southeastern Louisiana) has utilized her power to work her way into the outfield rotation.Â
Â
Pitchers: Senior Kylee Jo Trahan is the veteran leader of a staff that includes eight arms. Sophomore Summer Ellyson has turned in several solid starts (includes win over No. 2 Florida, no-hitter) and ranks Top 3 in ERA in the Sun Belt. Freshman Casey Dixon provides an additional option to start a contest and has been teaming with Ellyson to start in Sun Belt series. Carrie Boswell has been the first called up in relief duty in recent weeks. Junior Alison Deville gives the Cajuns a left-handed option out of the bullpen.
Â
Catchers: Returning starter and 2017 All-Sun Belt and NFCA All-Central Region performer Lexie Comeaux leads the group. Freshman Caitlin Garcia and sophomore Beth Ashley have also seen time behind the plate. Expect Comeaux, who started all 55 games in 2017, to resume the primary catcher's role the remainder of the season with Ashley serving as the backup.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
A RESILIENT BUNCH: The Ragin' Cajuns own eight come-from-behind wins this season. On Sun Belt-opening weekend at Coastal Carolina, the squad rallied twice from a deficit.
Â
ON THE MOVE: Whether it's a stolen base, picking up extra bases off a relay throw or utilizing the squeeze bunt – the Ragin' Cajuns keep opposing defenses on their heels. Louisiana enters the weekend 52-of-64 in the stolen base department.
Â
EVERYONE CONTRIBUTES: One glance at the Ragin' Cajuns stats it's clearly evident that anyone can step up at any time. Nine different players have posted double digit hits and the RBI figures are spread even with individuals ranging from six up to 16.
Â
POWER SURGE: The past two weekends has seen the Ragin' Cajuns show signs of increased power being added to the team's repertoire. Dating back to Casidy Chaumont's homer in the Coastal Carolina series finale, Louisiana has homered in four of the past five games.
Â
MAKING 'EM EARN IT:Â Louisiana's pitching staff has limited foes to fewer than five runs 21 times in 24 outings. The staff has an active streak of 13 straight games yielding less than five runs.
Â
DIXON'S DEVELOPMENT: Freshman pitcher Casey Dixon has been in control in the circle since the beginning of March. At the Judi Garman, she surrendered only seven hits in 10-1/3 innings highlighted by a 3-1/3 scoreless stint vs. No. 23 Michigan. At Coastal Carolina, she gave up just six hits in 11-2/3 innings and was the victor in the series clincher tossing a three-hitter.
Â
ONE-TWO PUNCH: While different in style, Summer Ellyson and Casey Dixon have been nearly the same numbers-wise in the pitching circle since the start of March…giving Louisiana seemingly interchangeable go-to pitchers. They've both tossed 29 innings in March, both have a 1.45 ERA in the month and both have held foes below .200 hitting during the span. Foes have picked up just 34 hits over the combined 58 innings the duo has worked this month.
Â
A WINNING FORMULA: The Ragin' Cajuns currently rank second in the Sun Belt Conference in pitching (2.08 ERA) and defense (.974 FLD%). Nationally, the squad is Top 25 in fielding and Top 40 in pitching. Â
Â
SITUATIONAL SUCCESS: Louisiana finished the Appalachian State series with 14 hits and 10 RBI in two-out situations. The squad was 14-for-30 (.467) at the plate with two outs against Mountaineers pitching.
Â
YOUTH IS BEING SERVED: Louisiana likely has one of the youngest starting lineups in the nation. In the batting order, there are five underclassmen appearing in a starter's role. In the pitching circle, the Ragin' Cajuns have utilized three youngsters which includes two freshmen (Casey Dixon, Carrie Boswell).
Â
SISTER, SISTER: The 5-3 putout is a unique one for Louisiana as it pairs sisters Kara Gremillion (third base) and Kourtney Gremillion (first base). The siblings are one the playing field together for the first time since Spring 2015 at St. Amant High School.
Â

• Kalyn Watts is another hitter to keep an eye on as the second half begins. Watts delivered a 4-for-5 performance in four appearances (one start) on last week's homestand.
• The Ragin' Cajuns lineup has been creating traffic the past three weeks. The squad has surpassed five hits in eight of the last nine outings and drawn multiple walks seven times during the span.

• Of the pitching staff's four shutouts recorded last week, freshman Casey Dixon collected the first of her collegiate career.
• Of the last 14 runs the pitching staff has allowed, the opposition has needed the benefit of a home run to score all but four of those runs.
