The Cajuns swept Xavier (La.) in a doubleheader at Cajun Courts, to have their best start in over a decade.
LAFAYETTE – With clinching wins from senior Abby Johnson and sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team improved to 6-0 after the first week of the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Xavier (La.) Gold Nuggets, 4-0, 4-1, at Cajun Courts.
Garcia went 2-0 winning both of her matches, while Johnson's win was the first of the 2018 season. Louisiana's two wins on the day now gives the Cajuns their best start in over a decade. It improves on their 6-1 start to the 2008 season and the Cajuns have a chance to finish all seven of their season opening matches at home without losing.
MATCH #1
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): A forfeit by Xavier (La.) at No. 6 singles gave the Cajuns a 1-0 lead as singles play began. Senior Elena Sava picked up her first win of the 2018 season when she took down Xavier (La.)'s Farah Baklouti in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. It put the Cajuns two wins away from clinching the first match of the doubleheader.
At No. 3, freshman Dana Radovanovic continued her great start to her collegiate career adding when she got her sixth win of the season at No. 3 singles with a straight set, 6-2, 6-1, win over Xavier (La.)'s Manon Bonada. Louisiana then wrapped things up at No. 5, when Garcia took care of business against the Gold Nugget's Yi Chen Pao, with a straight set win, 6-3, 7-5. It ended the first match, and it gave the Cajuns a 4-0 win to start the doubleheader.
MATCH #2
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Much like the first match, the Gold Nuggets forfeited at No. 6 singles to give the Cajuns an early 1-0 lead in the match. Garcia quickly added to it when she won against Xavier (La.)'s Baklouti, 6-1, 6-2, to make it a perfect 2-0 on the day for Garcia. Xavier (La.) got their lone win of the day at No. 2 when Goreau defeated Louisiana's Elena Sava, 6-1, 6-0. But the Cajuns bounced right back when at No. 5 freshman Morgan Forshag won her second match of the season with a straight set win over Chen Pao, 6-3, 6-3 to put the Cajuns up 3-1.
Lousiana then clinched the day, with a win at No. 3, when Johnson wrapped up her first win of the season with a straight set, hard fought, win 6-2, 7-5, to finish the match with the score sitting at 4-1 in favor of the Cajuns. And it wrapped up the Cajuns third doubleheader sweep of the week.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns to Cajun Courts, on Sunday, Feb. 4 when they host the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters with first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
