For the second time the two teams play a match decided by a combined 10 points
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team and Little Rock Trojans found themselves in another tightly contested match, with the visitors edging the hosts in a three-set affair Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Trojans' 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 decision mirrored the first matchup back on Oct. 13 in Little Rock which was also decided by a combined 10 points (25-22, 25-22, 25-21).
Little Rock (17-11, 9-6 Sun Belt) held a slim 43-41 edge in kills over Louisiana (14-15, 6-9 Sun Belt) while the Ragin' Cajuns totaled more blocks (8-6) and digs (58-49). The two teams battled through 12 lead changes and 25 ties through the match.
The loss eliminated Louisiana from contention for a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament from the West Division.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana produced 10 kills and played error-free in building a 20-15 lead in the opening set. Little Rock took advantage of four Ragin' Cajuns attack errors during a 6-0 run which shifted the momentum. A Desiree Johnson kill forged a tie, but the Trojans scored three straight points to seal the win.
Hanna Rovira single-handedly pulled the Ragin' Cajuns back into the second set, scoring three straight kills to trim the Little Rock lead to 16-15. The teams went back-and-forth until another series of untimely attack errors allowed the visitors to extend the margin to 24-19.
Back-to-back Nia Antoine kills capped of a 3-0 run that pulled Louisiana ahead 12-9 in the third set. The lead swapped hands twice in the waning moments with Antoine throwing up a block solo to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 23-22 advantage. The Trojans picked up a sideout off a Taylor Lindberg kill, then won the final two rallies to prevent Louisiana from extending the match.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Antoine and Rovira paced the Ragin' Cajuns efforts with nine kills each on a .350 and .269 hitting percentage, respectively. Dree'Ana Abram added eight kills off 19 swings and Johnson found the floor seven times in 16 swings.
Kicking off her senior weekend, Antoine posted five blocks (3 BS, 2 BA) to increase her season total to 95 and move within striking distance of a second straight 100-blocks season. Now at 289 career blocks she trails Mandi Gavin (290) by one for third place in the rally scoring era.
Johnson and Abram each added three blocks as Louisiana out-blocked the Sun Belt Conference's leader.
Libero Sydney Davis scooped a match-high 15 digs as she hit double figures for the 28th time in 29 matches. Davis also increased her career total to 1,979 leaving her 21 shy of 2,000 career digs as she enters her final career match on Sunday.
Setter Avery Breaux posted a team-high 17 assists and collected 14 digs for her seventh double-double in Sun Belt action.
