Late rallies in first and third set allow ULM to take wins away from Louisiana
MONROE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball dropped a tough three-set match at ULM on Sunday as timely rallies helped the hosts steal would-be wins by the visitors in the first and third set.
The Warhawks also benefitted from a more efficient attack, out-hitting the Ragin' Cajuns .261-.146 in collecting the 29-27, 25-18, 25-23 sweep. Louisiana produced more kills (47-45) but was undone by nearly twice as many attack errors (26-14).
Louisiana (14-14, 6-8 Sun Belt), which claimed a five-set battle from ULM (11-17, 3-11 Sun Belt) on Friday, finished with a split of the weekend set with its in-state Sun Belt counterpart.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ragin' Cajuns received four kills from Tia Smith during a 6-1 run which stretched the lead to 21-14 in the opening set. The Warhawks answered, using a 7-1 run to get back into the set and ultimately force extra points.
ULM would fight off set point six times, starting at a 24-21 deficit, before finishing off the comeback when kills from Mikaela Worley and Kate Blasingame capture the lead for good at 28-27.
The Warhawks started the second set with a 6-0 run and never trailed in opening a 2-0 match advantage.
A pair of Hanna Rovira kills ignited a five-point spurt by the Ragin' Cajuns which extended their lead to 19-9 in the third set. ULM won the next five rallies, four by benefit of a Louisiana miscue, to prevent the visitors from pulling away.
Desiree Johnson scored a kill to give Louisiana a 23-19 lead and a chance to extend the match. The Warhawks responded with another improbable run, scoring the final six points to end the match.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Johnson finished with a career-best 11 kills and was joined in double figures by Hali Wisnoskie who produced 10 kills on her birthday.
Smith's seven kills on 12 attempts marked her highest output since her Sun Belt debut vs. Georgia State on Oct. 19. Nia Antoine (8 kills) and Rovira (7 kills) combined for 15 kills.
Libero Sydney Davis led the way with 16 digs which increased her career total to 1,964 leaving her 36 shy of joining Nia Kiggundu in reaching the 2,000-mark.
Avery Breaux handed out 20 of the team's 42 assists and added eight digs to her stat line. Fellow setter Milayne Danna was one dig shy of a fourth straight match with double digits.
