Precision hitting and hustle on defense carried Louisiana to the four-set triumph
LAFAYETTE – Behind a dominant start and finish the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team topped Georgia State in four sets (25-13, 23-25, 26-24, 25-15) on Friday at Earl K. Long Gym.
Louisiana (11-12, 3-6 Sun Belt) fired off 16 kills on a .516 percentage to race past the Panthers in the opening set. In the match-clincher, the Ragin' Cajuns landed 13 kills at a .462 clip and limited the Panthers (5-15, 2-8 Sun Belt) to just eight kills.
The Ragin' Cajuns' .299 match hitting percentage was the squad's Sun Belt-play high mark, while the 82 digs were an overall season-high tally.
Libero Sydney Davis collected 24 digs which increased her career total to 1,872, pushing her past Lindsay Brown (1,863 digs from 2007-10) for the program's rally scoring era record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana's fine-tuned efficiency in the first set kept the hosts one step ahead until they were able to put the frame away with a 5-0 run – sparked by two kills apiece for Hali Wisnoskie and Tia Smith –
That increased the advantage to 18-10.
GSU used a 5-0 run of its own to break a 13-all tie and turn the tables in the second set. The Ragin' Cajuns stormed back to even the score at 20-all, but the Panthers answered with back-to-back kills to reclaim the lead, then recorded a sideout after each Louisiana point to hold on.
There were 20 ties and 10 lead changes in the third set, which went to extra points after Wisnoskie killed an overpass with Louisiana trailing 24-23. Milayne Danna served up an ace for the lead, then Davis set up Wisnoskie for set point.
The Ragin' Cajuns rolled out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set and were never threatened on the way to match point.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Hanna Rovira's 13 kills led a trio of Ragin' Cajuns with double-digit kills. Dree'Ana Abram landed 12 kills off 22 swings and Wisnoskie added 11 kills.
Smith made her Earl K. Long Gym debut and produced eight kills with no errors in 13 attempts (.615 percentage).
Setters Avery Breaux (25 assists) and Danna (24 assists) both reached the 20-assist mark, accounting for all but two of Louisiana's 51 assists.
Davis highlighted the Ragin' Cajuns season-high dig effort and she was supported by Rovira's 15 digs, 10 from Lexi Hebert and nine apiece from Breaux and Danna.
