Ragin’ Cajuns Golf Heads To Inaugural Southern Collegiate Match Play

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team will get its final tune up before the Sun Belt Conference tournament this weekend as the Cajuns tee off at the inaugural Southern Collegiate Match Play on Saturday at the par-71, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club.

"This event came about because both the Sun Belt and Conference-USA tournaments have switched to match play in the last couple years," head coach Theo Sliman said. "This event gives us a chance to get some experience with match play. Match play requires a different mindset than stroke play, so this gives our guys a chance to get comfortable with match play and to be mentally prepared for the conference tournament next weekend."

Host Southern Miss, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech and South Alabama will participate in the match play event.

The morning matches will include Southern Miss facing Conference USA rival Louisiana Tech at 7:30 a.m., while the Ragin' Cajuns will face the Jaguars starting at 8:05 a.m.

The winners of the morning matches will tee off at 1:35 p.m. in the winner's bracket match. The losing sides will face off in a loser's bracket match starting at 1 p.m.

The format for the match play will see five players from each team play head-to-head with the first squad to three individual wins claiming the match.

Fernando Cruz Valle, Ragnar Gardarsson, Thomas Strandemo, Aron Juliusson and Triston Elston make up the lineup for Louisiana at the Southern Collegiate Match Play.
