Senior wins sixth straight decision as Louisiana improves to 8-8

LAFAYETTE – Senior Alexandra Way, playing in her final home match, teamed with India Shiaelis for a 6-2 win in doubles before posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Prairie View's Neharika Rama at No. 1 singles to clinch a 4-0 win for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team on Saturday at Cajun Courts.

Kelly Drew and Carla Ortega each posted straight-set victories in singles play for Louisiana (8-8) while Lucile Delabarre and Abby Johnson clinched the doubles point for the Ragin' Cajuns with a 6-4 win over Rama and Stacy Lackey at No. 1 doubles.

"Everyone played a part in the win today so it was nice to see everyone have success in doubles or singles if not both for the day," head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "It was great to see Kelly step up after doubles and take home the early singles win at No. 2."

Way and Shiaelis improved to 3-0 in doubles play on the season after defeating Timara Maxwell and Trinity Randolph at No. 3, 6-3. After Tatiana Ruhl and Sydney Thomas posted a 6-2 win for Prairie View (6-23) over Drew and Ortega at No. 2, forcing a deciding match, Delabarre and Johnson broke the serve of Rama and Lackey with a 5-4 lead to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 1-0 lead.

Ortega, who posted her team-best 11th win of the season, recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ruhl at No. 6 before Drew claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lackey at No. 2.

Way, who won her sixth straight decision after starting the spring 0-5, rallied in the second set to defeat Rama and giving Louisiana its third straight victory and seventh in its last nine matches.

"For our senior Ali Way, I am incredibly proud of her for staying focused at the top spot and closing out her match in straight sets," Vallejos said. "A great way for her to end on Senior Day."

Louisiana will wrap up the regular season with a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches beginning Friday in Arlington, Texas. The Ragin' Cajuns will face UTA on Friday before facing No. 50-ranked ULM on Saturday.
