Louisiana heads to Little Rock, Ark., and Jonesboro, Ark. to being their 2017-18 Sun Belt Conference play.

LAFAYETTE – For the second season in a row the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team begins their Sun Belt Conference play with the Arkansas swing, taking on Little Rock on Friday Dec. 29 with tip scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup, on Dec. 31, against Arkansas State with that game starting at 1 p.m.

Louisiana enters conference play having gone 5-7 through their non-conference schedule, and they won their last non-conference game against Alcorn State on Dec. 20, 67-47.  Little Rock brings a 3-8 record into the weekend, and the Cajuns won their last matchup, snapping a four-game losing streaking beating the Trojans in the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Arkansas State enters the weekend with a 5-6 record, and they'll host ULM on Dec. 29 before welcoming the Cajuns to Jonesboro, Ark.  Louisiana won last season's series, beating the Red Wolves both times the two teams met in the 2016-17 portion of the conference season.

CAJUNS EDUCATE ALCORN STATE: Louisiana's last game, on Dec. 20, was a 67-47 win over the Alcorn State Lady Braves in the fourth-annual education game at the Cajundome.  The Cajuns led the game wire-to-wire and they were led by freshman Ty'Reonne Doucet who came off the bench to finish with a double-double (16 points and 11 rebounds).

Freshman Skyler Goodwin (12 points) and sophomore Kimberly Burton (10 points) joined Doucet in scoring double digits, while sophomore Brittney Myles added 10 rebounds of her own as the Cajuns outrebounded the Lady Braves 46 to 32 in the game while holding Alcorn State to 31 percent from the field.

DOUCET IMPRESSES: Doucet has had quite the stretch over her last three games.  Through the last trifecta of games, she's averaged 19.3 minutes, all coming off the bench, scoring an average of 10 points per game, while shooting 61 percent from the field and she's added to that a strong presence on the boards, averaging 9.3 rebounds per game.

Doucet started her great trio of solid performances with a four point 10 rebound performance on Dec. 13 at Southeastern Louisiana.  She then cracked double digits in scoring with 10 points and seven rebounds at LSU on Dec. 17.  Doucet put it all together for her first career double-double (16 points and 11 rebounds) against Alcorn State on Dec. 20, and she's a strong option off the bench for the Cajuns entering conference play.

CAJUNS RANKED IN THE CONFERECE: As a team Louisiana has been strong on the defensive boards, and they enter the weekend ranked second in the conference in defensive rebounding percentage (70 percent) having grabbed a league high 312 defensive rebounds.

Senior Simone Fields has been shooting the ball consistently well, and it shows in her 50 percent field goal percentage which puts her in a tie for third in the conference.  She's also second on the team in scoring and her 9.3 points per game puts her in a tie for 21st in the conference.

Goodwin's workhorse mentality has meant that she's racked up quite a few number of minutes, and entering the first weekend of conference competition she sits fourth in the Sun Belt with 343 minutes averaging 34.3 minutes per game.  She's also scoring the ball well, leading the Cajuns with 11.7 points per game which places her 14th in the conference.

WHAT THE TROJANS BRING: Little Rock enters the game with a 3-8 record, having lost their last four games by a combined score of 185-266 and their last game was a 56-37 loss at home to the LSU Tigers.

The Trojans are scoring only 55.3 points per game, which places them 10th in the conference.  They're only shooting 38 percent from the field, but they do protect the ball well.  They're plus 1.6 in turnover margin, which is good for third in the conference and they're only averaging 15.1 turnovers per game.  Where they are strong is at the free throw line where the Trojans are third in the conference shooting 73 percent from the charity stripe.

Ronjanae DeGray is leading the Trojans in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and she's snagging 4.6 rebounds a game.  Monique Townson is the driving force for the Trojans, and she's leading the Trojans in assists with 44, averaging 4.0 per game which places her in a tie for third in the conference.  Townson is second in the conference in steals, averaging 2.4 per game (26 on the season) and it all adds up to the best assist/turnover ratio in the conference (2.3).

WHAT THE RED WOLVES BRING: Arkansas State enters the weekend with a 5-6 record having played a tough non-conference schedule themselves, and they did get a signature win at Florida, beating the Gators 70-69 on Nov. 14.  They'll face ULM on Dec. 29 before hosting the Cajuns in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves are scoring 62.3 points per game, while shooting 36 percent from the field.  They're allowing opponents to score 76.0 points per game while teams have shot 46 percent from the field against them.  Arkansas State does block shots well, with 39 on the season, averaging 3.5 blocks per game which places them in a three-way tie for third in the conference.

Akasha Westbrook is leading the Red Wolves in scoring averaging 12.7 points per game which places her 11th in the conference.  Westbrook is also leading the team in steals with 20 which places her seventh in the conference averaging 1.8 steals per game.  Jada Ford joins Westbrook in averaging 10.1 points per game and she's shooting 34 percent from three-point range.  Lauren Bradshaw leads the Red Wolves in blocks with 14 blocks and that places her in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference averaging 1.3 blocks per game.
