Cajuns Head To LSU For A Sunday Matchup

It's the 31st matchup between the two schools and its the first time the two teams have played in 10 years.
LAFAYETTE – Fresh off a midweek win against the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team will head to Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, Dec. 17, to face off with in-state foes, the LSU Tigers, in the 31st matchup between the two schools with a midafternoon tip of 2 p.m.

The 68-56 win on Wednesday, Dec. 13, over the Lady Lions means that Louisiana brings a 4-6 record into the matchup with LSU. While the Tigers haven't played since Sunday, Dec. 10, a 73-50 win at Tulane and they're ridding a three-game winning streak.

The game, which is the fourth SEC team the Cajuns have played this season, will be the first home game of the month for LSU, having not played at the Maravich Center since Nov. 21, and they bring a 5-3 record into Sunday's matchup against the Cajuns.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Louisiana and LSU haven't faced each other on the court since Nov. 21, 2007, a game in Baton Rouge that the Tigers won 72-37. LSU comes into the game against the Cajuns having won the last 25 matchups between the two schools, with the previous five being in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana's last victory over the Tigers was 43 years ago when they beat the Tigers 48-40 on Mar. 2, 1974 in Lafayette. The 10 year stretch where the two schools haven't played is the longest in the historic series where the two schools haven't played. It surpasses the previous longest stretch of seven years from 1977 to 1984.

CAJUNS TAKE HAMMOND, AMERICA – On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the Cajuns made the roughly two-hour drive east to Hammond, La. where they beat the Lady Lions, 68-56, in what was their sixth straight win against Southeastern Louisiana going back to 2011.

In the game, senior Simone Fields led the Cajuns in scoring, with 19 points and 6 rebounds, while freshman Ty'Reonne Doucet grabbed a career high 10 rebounds off the bench to help the Cajuns lead wire-to-wire against the Lady Lions.

Louisiana was strong defensively, holding the Lady Lions to 33 percent shooting from the field and in the first quarter the Lady Lions only shot 18 percent from the field. Along with their solid defense against a good shooting team, the Cajuns crashed the boards, outrebounding the 43 to 31 to help control the game from start to finish.
MO GETS HER GROOVE BACK: After struggling through the first month of the season, Fields has started to get going. The senior forward, who scored her 1,000th career point on Nov. 18 at Toledo, has scored double digits in two of the last three games. She had 25 points and seven rebound against McNeese, a 98-86 triple overtime win at the Cajundome, and she poured in 19 points and grabbed six rebounds at SLU to lead the Cajuns in scoring.Â

During the past three games Fields has shot the ball well. She's shooting 74 percent from the field over those three game (20-27) and she's averaged 5.0 rebounds per game grabbing 15 rebounds giving her 50 rebounds on the season which is first on the team.
THOMAS IS BACK: For the first time in the 2017-18 season sophomore Jasmine Thomas finally saw the court. Having suffered a meniscus tear in the offseason, Thomas hadn't gotten a chance to get into a game through the first month of the season. But against SLU, Thomas took the next step to a full recovery playing 13 minutes off the bench and scoring nine points, going 4 for 6 from the line.
WHAT THE TIGERS BRING: LSU comes into the game with a 5-3 record, having played and won their last game, 73-50, at Tulane on Dec. 10. The Tigers are on a three-game winning streak, having not lost since playing and losing 75-66 to Texas in Las Vegas, Nevada at the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout.

They're averaging 64.0 points per game while shooting 43 percent. They're averaging 12.9 assists per game while averaging 39.6 rebounds per game. Defensively the Tigers are allowing 56.1 points per game while snagging 9.3 steals per game. And teams are shooting 38 percent from the field against the Tigers defense.

Raigyne Louis is leading the Tigers in scoring averaging 17.0 points per game and she's shooting 49 percent from the field. Louis is also leading the Tigers in assists with 33 that puts her at a 4.1 average per game.

Chloe Jackson sits just behind Louis in scoring as she's averaging 16.1 points per game and she's shooting 45 percent from the field. Ayana Mitchell is leading the Tigers in rebounds having crashed the boards for 53 rebounds averaging 6.6 boards per game and she's tossing in 8.5 points per game.
