Men's Tennis Heads To LSU For ITA Southern Regionals

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's men's tennis team will send four men to Baton Rouge, La., for the 2017 ITA Southern Regionals starting on Thursday, Oct. 19 and going through the weekend finishing up on Monday, Oct. 23.

The Cajuns are sending junior Arthur Libaud along with sophomore's Jamie Fraser and Elio Lago and freshman Pierce Gilheany.

THE WEEKEND'S SCHEDULE: The weekend's tournament will consist of a ITA qualifying bracket, a round of 64 singles competition and a round of 64 doubles competition, to make up a full weekend of tennis. The Cajuns are all starting in the ITA qualifying bracket and the round of 64 singles competition will act as a back draw if any of the Cajuns men lose their first round match.

Thursday kicks off the weekend with the first and second rounds of ITA singles qualifying starting at 9 a.m. with the first round and the second round starting at 1 p.m.

Friday will see the qualifying singles wrap up with the finals being at 9 a.m., followed by the start of the round of 64 singles competition. The singles round of 64 starts at 1 p.m. and the day is wrapped up with the first round of 64 doubles starting at 4 p.m.

Saturday is a busy day with the singles round of 32 starting at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., followed by the singles round of 16 beginning at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The doubles round of 32 will start up at 5 p.m. with matches beginning at 5:30 p.m. as well.

Sunday and Monday's schedule has yet to be determined but when it is that information will be passed along.

WHO THE RAGIN' CAJUNS ARE FACING: Fraser, who's seeded fifth in his portion of the ITA qualifying bracket, has a bye in the first round and he'll face either Nicholls' Nestor Giribet or Jacksonville State's Aljaz Kaplja in the second round at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Libaud has the same situation that Fraser does, earning the fifth seed in his portion of the bracket and gaining a bye. Libaud will face either Troy's Jorge Poyatos or LSU's Stewart Block at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Gilheany will take on UNO's Giacomo Adonececchi in his first-round matchup and Lago, who's seeded ninth in his bracket, takes on Troy's Shaaz Peerani to wrap up the singles portion of the Cajuns first day.

In doubles, starting on Friday, the Cajuns have two pairs going. Lago and Gilheany are paired together and they'll take on Ole Miss' grouping of Cotter Wilson and Grey Hamilton, with that match starting at 4 p.m. on Friday.

While Fraser and Libaud will play together and they'll take on UAB's Kenton Parton and Anru Fourie in their first-round match-up which like their teammates, starts at 4 p.m. on Friday.

WHAT SCHOOLS ARE THERE: Louisiana is joining a collection of schools from Mississippi, Alabama making up a great collection of competition. Those schools include the SEC programs of Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The non-SEC schools sending men to the competition are Jacksonville State, Nicholls, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss., Troy, Tulane, UAB and New Orleans.
