Washington pulls down career-high 21 boards to record 13th double-double
LAFAYETTE – Johnathan Stove scored five of his 10 points in a 10-2 run late in the second half and Bryce Washington pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team to a 69-60 win over ULM in a Sun Belt Conference game before an announced crowd of 4,714 on Saturday at the Cajundome.
Jay Wright scored a team-high 16 points while freshman P.J. Hardy came off the bench to add 14 as Louisiana (12-4, 2-1 SBC) improved to 8-0 at home this season. Freshman Justin Miller added nine points and five rebounds for Louisiana, which used a 20-7 run to close out the first half and take a 41-29 lead at halftime.
"We felt like they'd (ULM) play a heavy dose of zone, they had played some earlier this season and we didn't attack it very well early," head coach Bob Marlin said. "Frank (Bartley) hits a quick 3-pointer and P.J. Hardy loosened it up for us a little bit off the bench.
"We knew that we were in for a war in the second half. We had to call timeout and challenge our guys and by then, they (ULM) were in a groove. We were able to make the plays when we needed to and then we made some good defensive plays as well."
ULM (6-10, 0-3 SBC) closed to within 57-55 when Sam McDaniel scored on a layup with 5:57 remaining before Louisiana would pull away. Stove, who finished 4-for-10 from the floor, connected on a 3-pointer for a 60-55 lead before Larenz Stalcup would make the second of two free throws for a 61-57 lead with 3:45 remaining.
Washington, who recorded his 13th double-double of the season tying him for the national lead, added a pair of free throws with 3:17 remaining for a 63-57 lead before Stove and Wright each added layups for a 67-57 lead with 1:53 left.
Louisiana trailed 7-5 early in the contest when Hardy came in and sank back-to-back 3-pointers for an 11-7 lead. The freshman added a third 3-pointer for a 14-10 lead with 12:40 remaining in the first half before sinking his fourth in part of a 7-0 run in the second half that snapped a 44-44 deadlock.
The Warhawks led twice in the first half, the last coming on a 3-pointer by Travis Munnings that gave ULM a 22-21 lead with 7:09 remaining. Louisiana answered as Jerekius Davis scored on a short jumper, Washington sank a pair of free throws and Wright added a 3-pointer and two free throws for a 30-22 lead with 4:30 remaining in the half.
ULM opened the second half with a 15-3 run as Jordan Harris scored nine of his 14 points during the span. Harris tied the game at 44-44 with a jumper in the lane with 15:37 remaining before a pair of buckets by Miller and a 3-pointer by Hardy helped Louisiana take a 51-44 lead with 11:17 left.
Marvin Jean-Pierre scored 16 points to lead ULM with McDaniel adding 11. Munnings, ULM's leading scorer entering the game, was held to eight points on 3 of 13 shooting before fouling out with 12:39 remaining.
Louisiana will return to league action on Saturday (Jan. 14) when it plays host to Georgia Southern at the Cajundome. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
